Project Director – Battery

Location: Hybrid with a preference for Newcastle, Great Hunter Region, Sydney or Melbourne with frequent interstate travel to project sites during the construction phase.

AGL is seeking an experienced Project Director – Battery to lead the development and execution of our battery energy storage projects. This is a pivotal role responsible for delivering large-scale energy storage assets on time, within budget, and to the highest safety and quality standards.

You’ll take charge of end-to-end project execution, ensuring seamless coordination between contractors, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders, while driving compliance with industry and AGL standards. This role requires a strong leader with expertise in construction, engineering, financial management, and risk mitigation.

Key Responsibilities

• Safety & Risk Leadership – Safety leadership taking full responsibility for health, safety and environmental management. This includes: Lead HSE initiatives, ensure contractor compliance, and drive risk mitigation strategies.
• Project Execution & Delivery – Oversee design, construction and commissioning activities of the project to ensure seamless project execution.
• Financial & Commercial Oversight – Manage CAPEX budgets, cost controls, and contract negotiations to drive best financial and commercial outcome for the project.
• Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement – Lead the project team and contractors, align with AGL’s sustainability goals, and manage key relationships with regulators, contractors, and communities.
• Regulatory & Compliance Management – Secure permits, approvals, and ensure full compliance with industry and workplace standards.

About You

• Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Project Management, or a related field.
• 10+ years’ experience in project management, preferably in large infrastructure with renewable energy projects.
• Good understanding of National Electricity rules is preferred.
• Proven track record delivering large-scale infrastructure and construction projects ($400M+) (large-scale energy projects is preferred).
• Expertise in EPC contracts, contract negotiation, and risk management.
• Outstanding leadership skills with experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams and external contractors.
• Exceptional problem-solving, decision-making, and stakeholder engagement abilities.
• Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies.
