Job Description
SP Energy Networks (SPEN) are working to achieve network targets set by the Scottish and UK Government as part of our journey to Net Zero. Our focus is on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. SPEN is building a dynamic network to meet the changing demands for electricity and increasingly, renewable electricity – safely, securely and sustainably in the communities we serve.
An Engineer within Licence Design and Development is responsible for designing and developing overhead line and underground cable network projects and appropriate contract procurement strategies to enable the compilation of robust and coordinated projects, programmes of work, and balanced workbooks to facilitate their effective delivery within a licence area, whilst driving optimised value form the regulatory contract.
What you’ll be doing
- Developing programmes of work with efficient solutions and build robust, cohesive and coordinated plans and balanced workbooks to enable effective delivery within licence area whilst driving optimised value from the regulatory contract.
- Developing licence area business plan outputs in line with financial, regulatory and business plan objectives whilst optimising return through incentive mechanisms.
- Supporting the infrastructure design, ensuring documents, designs and drawings are high quality and comply with design standards.
- Working alongside team, management and contractors to support design delivery, liaise with key stakeholders to ensure that projects are delivered to cost, schedule, technical and quality standards.
- Developing and maintaining robust stakeholder and customer relationships on behalf of Scottish Power to facilitate delivery of customer and stakeholder strategic objectives.
- Promoting an exemplary safety culture and ensures that all safety legislation is implemented and delivered through all activities.
- Considering the application of innovative solutions to all designs whether this be technological, procedural or commercial.
- Driving continual performance improvement through analysis of outputs and feedback from internal and external sources.
- Integrating asset stewardship values through effective network management incorporating sound engineering principles, coordinated planning, design, delivery and ownership to improve integrity, safety and longevity of the electrical network, promoting an exemplary safety culture and ensures that all safety legislation is implemented and delivered through all activities.
- Developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours amongst the team through the mentoring and training of less experienced team members, graduates and trainees.
What you’ll bring
The postholder will be a strong communicator (written and verbal) and be able to effectively present information to all, they will be able to manage competing priorities and apply sound engineering and financial judgement in decision making and when facing complex challenges and problem solving.
It is essential that the individual has an understanding and awareness of key business drivers and commercial context in which SPEN operates and can balance customer service, network design efficiency and return on investment.
To be successful, you will have:
- Engineering/Professional qualification
- Previous experience in overhead line design or construction with Electrical Engineering.
- Experience of contract & SLA management.
- Relevant network construction and operational experience preferred.
- General commercial & regulatory awareness with the ability to balance customer service, operational delivery, and efficient financial performance.
- Knowledge of regulatory environment including relevant output and incentive mechanisms.
- Understanding of standards required in construction and maintenance works.
Experience of land use, contractor management and landowner/stakeholder negotiations is advantageous.
