Job Description

The Principal Engineer - Hardware Development calls for an experienced, knowledgeable, and talented engineer to lead the development of hardware components for the Engineering organization. As a hardware technical lead, you will have an opportunity to lead and collaborate with other engineers to design, plan, develop, and maintain electronic design and industry best practices engineering team. Experienced and high contributing engineer capable of handling complicated R&D hardware, firmware, software, and complete solutions projects as part of a cross-functional team. Collaborates with Product Management, Project management and other R&D teams in design, development, and validation of complete Smart Grid solutions. Collaborates with SMEs and business partners on component and system design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design, and development of wireless communication devices
  • Contribute to the overall system architecture that utilize communication devices by working with Systems and Solutions architecture teams.
  • Work with the other architects in the wireless communications platform team, and Global Procurement, on the selection of major components used in RF devices
  • Resource allocation responsibilities teams being managed.
  • Responsible for subordinate teams' on-time delivery & quality adherence.
  • Contribution to department budgeting.
  • Direct contribution in the hiring process through technical & team fit interviews.
  • Direct contribution to the performance appraisal process, feeding into performance improvement plans & employee recognition plans.
  • Provide leadership in design, development, documentation, bench/compliance testing, etc.
  • Develop specifications including functional requirements, detailed design, test procedures as part of multidisciplinary team.
  • Identify technical areas for improvement and make detailed business cases for improvements or new areas of opportunities.
  • Provide support, troubleshoot, and resolve sustaining issues with high Quality Output.
  • Provide detailed & accurate estimates for development efforts.
  • Lead in component and/or solution design, development, documentation, and validation.
  • Work on agile development teams, collaborating with multiple cross-discipline architecture teams to develop hardware and software components as part of L+G Smart Grid solutions.
  • Participate in recruitment, development and mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Lead functional area-specific continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Lead in innovative technology and solutions development and/or validation

  • Knowledge in modern Communications technologies RF Mesh (Wi-SUN), Cellular (LTE M, NB-IoT), Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Bluetooth/BLE
  • Expert level RF and Antenna Design experience
  • Knowledge of development processes, tools, and related frameworks
  • Deep knowledge with relevant development and/or validation methodologies
  • Deep knowledge of AMI and Smart Grid Systems and Solutions
  • Experience with analog circuit design, specification development, electronics packaging, and environmental qualification testing.
  • Experience with low noise analog design, PCB design considerations for grounding, transient protection, noise immunity, and signal conditioning.
  • Proficient use of lab equipment, o-scopes, logic analyzers, signal generators, DVMs
  • Experience with power/AC electronics such as transformers, regulators, switching supplies, filtering.
  • High voltage design experience highly desirable
  • Experience with embedded software is highly desirable.
  • Experience in product development and manufacturing processes
  • Ability to proficiently utilize standard computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processors, basic CAD tools, web browsers, email, and Windows.

Pay is in the range of $112,965 - $162,627 per year. The position is eligible for a 401(k) match and consideration for an annual bonus. The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include, as applicable, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, and certifications or other professional licenses held.
