Careers at Octopus Energy

Help us use technology to make a big green dent in the universe!

Kraken powers some of the most innovative global developments in energy.

We’re a technology company focused on creating a smart, sustainable energy system. From optimizing renewable generation, creating a more intelligent grid and enabling utilities to provide excellent customer experiences, our operating system for energy is transforming the industry around the world in a way that benefits everyone.

It’s a really exciting time in energy. Help us make a real impact on shaping a better, more sustainable future.

About our team

At Kraken we’ve developed an innovative platform that is licensed to support 54 million customer accounts in 17 countries, and we aim to serve 100 million globally by 2027.

Industry Analytics is a newly established business area that sits in our Industry Implementation product group. Our purpose is to serve as the foundation for energy industry expertise in every market. Industry Analysts leverage specialist domain knowledge to detect where issues originate and solve key problems for our clients and end consumers. We are responsible for ensuring Kraken manages industry data successfully, and support Tech and Product teams to develop efficient and compliant products.

As the volume, scope and geographical range of the business rapidly expands, we’re looking for individuals who have a deep understanding of their local market to join Industry Analytics teams across the world, to help us build and maintain our industry data, processes and products.

We’re passionate about building great technology to change the way customers use, and think about energy for the good of the planet. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with us on real market-based challenges, help to drive the development of Kraken’s industry products, move us towards net zero, and support the energy transition.

What you'll do

  • You’ll use your deep understanding of local energy actors, interactions, data exchange processes, regulation and compliance to:
    • identify problems and take ownership of them, from carrying out root cause analysis to seeing through to resolution
    • provide support in resolving errors and bugs in industry messages (the level of support will vary per country)
    • monitor the success of Kraken’s industry products to proactively spot and resolve issues quickly to protect end consumer experiences
    • scope out compliance needs and changes and implement them alongside Tech, considering deadlines, capacity and resources
    • liaise with tech, product, our clients and others to identify new features in Kraken that need to be built or enhanced
    • gather requirements, define approaches, and help write pitch documents so developers can hit the ground running with new projects
    • help prioritize work that champions building purposeful, valuable solutions
    • build and maintain dashboards including our monitoring and alerting suite (this will vary per country)
    • create frameworks and documentation to enable self-serve in the business (e.g. industry glossaries, process maps, onboarding material)
    • be exposed to new technologies and tools

What you'll need

  • expertise in the Energy Industry of your local market, with a focus on the supplier perspective
  • an eye for detail, to support in spotting and helping resolve errors and bugs
  • curiosity and a passion for problem solving
  • a data-driven and outcome-focussed approach - you recognize what needs to be done (and just as important, what doesn’t right now)
  • a keen desire to make things better and identify opportunities for improvement through automation
  • ability to work with ambiguity and define problems
  • project management skills including strong organization and time management
  • a love of learning across subject areas
  • to be a great listener - fantastic ideas come from everywhere in Kraken Technologies, so you’ll need to be able to spot and harness them
  • the ability to work from our downtown Houston office location. We strongly prefer to have somebody Houston-based for this role, but are open to considering other Texas-based applicants.

It would be great if you have

  • data skills or analytics experience (or a passion to learn)
  • data visualization and dashboarding
  • ability to read and write basic SQL (or a passion to learn)

Why else you'll love it here

  • Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options including FSAs.
  • Paid time off — we know working hard means also being able to recharge as needed, we trust our employees to get the work done and take the time they need.
  • 401(k) plan with employer match.
  • Parental leave. Biological, adoptive and foster parents are all eligible.
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Flexible working environment: you need to shift around your schedule? You do you, we genuinely believe in work/life balance.
  • Equity Options: every Octopus employee owns part of the business. We’re a team, working together towards huge goals. Every person is crucial to our success, you should be rewarded as such.
  • Modern office or co-working spaces depending on location.
  • Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! When on a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!

If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.

Studies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.
