Lead, Electrical Engineering
Lead as Electrical Engineering Lead at Ampd Energy in Hong Kong, overseeing design and development of mobile energy storage systems.
At Ampd Energy, we believe in making a zero-emission future for many industries a reality. Founded in 2014, Ampd Energy develops robust, versatile, advanced, compact, and connected battery energy storage systems (BESS) to replace the dirty, noisy, and hazardous diesel generators that power job sites in industries such as construction, civil works, mining, events, film, and utilities.
Ampd Energy is a mission and values-driven company with a diverse, high-performing global team supported by visionary customers who all want to make a difference. We are poised for significant expansion and seek dynamic, passionate team members to help propel our growth.
Description of the Role
Ampd is currently seeking to hire a motivated and experienced Electrical Engineering Lead to join our team. This role is critical in overseeing the design and development of Ampd’s mobile energy storage system products. The successful candidate will lead an existing team of 4 electrical engineers and will be responsible for driving the continued growth and maturing of Ampd’s electrical engineering function.
What you will do
- Design Oversight. Oversee the design and development of electrical systems for Ampd’s products, ensuring compliance with industry standard, best practices and regulations. Specifically, you are expected to provide clarity on:
- the design direction, feasibility and scope of work in order to deliver on a given set of product requirements which you receive from the Product Management team;
- the degree of coverage of risks or defects in a validation and verification testing plan and ways to maximize coverage while shortening timelines and costs;
- what artifacts are necessary for a given programme and the order in which those artifacts will be delivered at different stage gates.
- Project Management. You are expected to collaborate with Programme Management to provide them with clarity on how the artifacts which your team will produce fit into the broader picture of a given programme. Within your team, you are expected to define and delegate work units to your team members, and provide them with clarity on what you’re expecting them to deliver, at what quality, and by when.
- Team Leadership. Manage, mentor and develop a team of electrical engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment where creative ideas can be raised, challenged, tested, validated and documented. Support your team by shielding and guiding them, while removing obstacles, fostering collaboration with other functional teams and escalating resourcing requests.
- Internal Collaboration. Work closely with cross-functional teams, both within engineering–including Mechanical Engineering, System & Electronics Engineering, Embedded Software & Firmware Engineering, Programme Management, Product Management and Compliance–and beyond–such as with Sourcing, Service and Quality Management.
- External Collaboration. Ampd relies significantly on vendor and supply chain partners for key components and services (such as specialized testing, logistics and certifications). You will be expected to contribute significantly to building and maintaining the relationships with vendors and supply chain partners to gain access to best-in-class components, resolve complex issues and improve quality in your capacity as a functional engineering lead.
- Safety. Ampd’s products are inherently electrical in nature and have very high levels of power density. Therefore, you are expected to champion a “Safety First” culture. This means you are expected to ensure that:
- All team members and especially your direct reports work and operate safely when handling or working around Ampd’s products;
- We constantly seek ways to make our products safer–noting the hierarchy of hazard controls–for our distributors and customers.
What you need
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or Electronics) required; Master’s degree a plus.
- Experience: At least 8 years of relevant work experience, including at least 3 years in a role where you were managing direct reports.
- Technical Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of electrical design software (AutoCAD, PSpice, Altium etc.). Strong awareness and in-depth understanding of the relevant electrical industry, regulatory and compliance standards, especially for LV electrical distribution and power conversion (e.g. IEC, IEEE, UL, NEC etc.).
- Leadership: Proven experience in leading, managing and motivating engineering teams, including through challenging and stretch goals. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Engineering rigor: Proven experience in supporting the development of best practices in an engineering organization such as comprehensive documentation, testing and validation and collaborating with Product Management (or clients) to develop clear requirements etc.
- Pluses:
- Prior experience designing or developing or integrating power electrical components or subsystems such as inverters or transformers or distribution panels. Prior experience designing or developing battery energy storage systems is a further plus.
- Strong experience developing or executing or managing functional and performance electrical testing plans. Prior experience with compliance testing is a further plus.
- Prior knowledge of industry and compliance standards for battery energy storage systems.
- Working proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, and written proficiency in Chinese.
