Job Description
Emergya Wind Technologies (EWT) is a global designer and manufacturer of direct drive wind turbines, active in Europe, North America and Asia. EWT was established in 2004 and is based in the Netherlands. The company offers a broad product portfolio of onshore direct drive wind turbines.
As a Lead Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and improving the electrical systems in EWT’s direct-drive wind turbines and renewable energy technologies. Your role will involve ensuring system performance, reliability, and compliance with international standards.
This role encompasses the entire electrical system of wind turbines, including critical components such as generators, transformers, converters, power conductors, cable harnesses, electrical switch-gear, and control cabinets.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of electrical systems and components for direct-drive wind turbines, ensuring alignment with performance and safety standards.
- Lead the design and optimization of power converters, including back-to-back converters, ensuring efficiency, reliability, and compliance with grid codes and international standards.
- Develop and optimize electrical layouts, schematics, and wiring diagrams and oversee the integration of electrical systems with other subsystems, such as mechanical, hydraulic, and control systems.
- Develop and review technical specifications, design documentation, test plans, and performance reports, particularly for power cables, protection relays, switchgear, and MV transformers.
- Define testing protocols for prototypes and production units to verify performance and safety.
- Validate system designs under various conditions, such as grid faults, load changes, and black start scenarios, ensuring compliance with safety and reliability standard
- Monitor and analyze the performance of electrical systems and power converters in operational wind turbines, identifying areas for optimization and resolving performance issues.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, software, and control engineers, to integrate electrical systems.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and team members.
- Prepare technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and performance reports.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in power electronics and renewable energy technologies, incorporating new findings into design practices.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems design, including transformers, switchgear, power converters
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and system-level issues
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and preparing technical documentation.
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations related to power converters and renewable energy systems.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to handle multiple projects simultaneously
- Proven experience in leading engineering teams and mentoring junior engineers.
- Ability to inspire and guide teams toward innovative solutions and continuous improvement
Desired Skills
- Familiarity with grid integration and compliance requirements for renewable energy systems.
- Fluent in English, with Dutch or any additional language being advantageous.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
Work Environment
- Primarily office-based with occasional visits to manufacturing facilities and wind turbines for testing and troubleshooting.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and control engineers.
