Advancing materials science for a sustainable future Materials science at Chalmers is a national strategic research environment anchored in a long tradition of outstanding research, where we combine excellent science with societal relevance. The strength lies in the broad spectrum of research topics and projects which span from curiosity driven research to devices and industrial applications. Our strong position is evident from our involvement in national initiatives such as the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability WISE and the Wallenberg Wood Science Center WWSC, and our success in attracting research centers such as 2D-TECH, the Competence Center for Catalysis KCK, Design for Circularity FibRe and the Center for Additive Manufacture Metals CAM2, highlighting our active collaboration with industrial partners.

With our research, education, and innovation activities, we address societal challenges and include all the important elements of advanced materials research: theory and modelling, synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of properties. Our three main thematic research areas are Materials for energy applications; Materials for health applications; and Materials for green transitions. This includes but is not limited to, materials for sustainable energy systems such as solar energy, batteries, fuel cells and catalysis, antibacterial and antiviral materials, lightweight materials based on polymer composites or superalloys, sustainable construction materials and materials from renewable feedstock. With a variety of teaching activities within our master and bachelor programs we educate materials science experts and engineers to drive the societal implementation of scientific advances.

The research community of the Area of Advance Material science is shaped by the vision “A sustainable society through excellence in materials science” and includes around 70 senior researchers with core activities at the departments for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Industrial and Materials Science, Life Sciences, Physics, and Microtechnology and Nanoscience, and involves researchers from other departments as well as the University of Gothenburg. Through our strategic work with infrastructure and equipment we provide access to state-of-the-art instrumentation at Chalmers Materials Analysis Laboratory CMAL and the Myfab clean room facilities, and we have strong collaborations within national infrastructure networks, including the advanced electron microscopy network ARTEMI, the MAXIV laboratory, the Swedish NMR center and the supercomputing infrastructure NAISS to name a few.
