At 3Degrees, we are committed to advancing a decarbonized future through bold, swift, and equitable climate action. We do this work by originating, marketing, selling, and trading environmental commodities such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), Carbon Credits, and Clean Fuel Standard Credits. As a member of our Research and Analysis team within the Environmental Markets (EM) division, you’ll apply your analytical and strategic expertise, to conduct market analysis, develop supply and demand models, and track portfolio trends. As a Market Analyst-NA, you'll play a critical role in shaping the environmental commodities market while driving real-world impact. You’ll serve as a bridge between data analysis, trading strategies, and market insights. Your prior experience with supply/demand forecasting in regulated carbon or clean fuel markets will be central to shaping market insights and enhancing our trading edge. Your responsibilities include developing innovative forecasting tools, translating complex datasets into actionable insights, and shaping trading strategies. Your expertise will go beyond supporting the trading desk—you'll challenge conventional thinking, identify strategic gaps, and introduce innovative solutions to improve our trading performance.

This is a full-time opportunity within the 3Degrees Environmental Markets division, based in Portland, ME, reporting to the Manager of Market Analysis. Exceptional candidates within commuting distance to our office hubs in San Francisco, CA; Portland, Oregon; or New York, NY will also be considered.

Please Note: 3Degrees does not provide sponsorship and/or relocation assistance; therefore, pre-existing right-to-work status is a prerequisite to be considered for this position.

What You’ll Do

As a Market Analyst, you will work closely with the trading, regulatory affairs, and data management teams to improve market intelligence, forecasting models, and strategic decision-making. Your work will focus on two key areas:

  • Market Reporting & Trading Strategy
    • Conduct weekly position and performance reviews for the North America Trading team
    • Monitor portfolio trends and collaborate with traders to identify and capitalize on market opportunities
    • Deliver data-driven trading recommendations to portfolio managers and contribute to strategic decision-making for carbon and clean fuel markets
    • Partner with the Data Management team to enhance automation, improve data infrastructure, and develop real-time trading dashboards
  • Market Forecasting & Quantitative Modeling
    • Develop proprietary market forecasting models using Python, Excel, and Tableau to predict environmental commodity price movements
    • Apply sensitivity analysis and advanced statistical techniques to refine forecasting accuracy and improve trading strategies
    • Collaborate closely with Regulatory Affairs to assess policy and legislative changes and their potential market impact, particularly within North American carbon and clean fuel markets
    • Build and refine supply and demand forecasting tools tailored to LCFS, CCA, and other North American carbon markets, incorporating real-time market signals, policy developments, and macroeconomic trends
    • Translate model outputs into actionable insights that guide high-stakes trading decisions

About You

You are an analytical thinker with a strong foundation in quantitative analysis, financial modeling, and market research. You excel at interpreting complex market trends, identifying trading opportunities, and delivering actionable insights—particularly in carbon and clean fuel markets. Your strategic mindset and problem-solving skills enable you to proactively refine trading strategies and optimize portfolio performance. You thrive in fast-paced environments, balancing independent research with collaborative teamwork. You are detail-oriented, ensuring data accuracy and model precision, and can effectively communicate complex findings to key stakeholders. You are also self-motivated, with a strong desire to drive environmental market growth in North America and beyond. We believe an individual who possesses the following skills will thrive in this role:

Key Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience developing statistical models and supply/demand forecasting tools, ideally in North American carbon and clean fuel markets (e.g., California Carbon Allowances, LCFS) is required
  • Knowledge of additional environmental markets, including voluntary carbon, renewable energy, renewable natural gas, and power markets (preferred but not required)
  • Expertise in Python-based modeling, including multivariate techniques, options pricing models, and technical analysis
  • Strong ability to track market trends and interpret the impact of policy and legislative changes on environmental markets
  • Meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to detect anomalies in large datasets and enhance forecasting accuracy
  • Proven ability to collaborate in team-based environments and drive shared goals
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex data clearly to diverse audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and perform well under pressure
  • Proficiency in Excel, Python, and Tableau (knowledge of SQL, VBA, or R is a plus)
  • BA/BS degree in economics, quantitative finance, statistics, or a related field is preferred

How We Define Success

Within 30 days, you will gain a thorough understanding of North American carbon and clean fuel markets, 3Degrees’ portfolio, and the trading team's objectives through onboarding assessments and participation in strategy meetings. You will build meaningful cross-functional relationships with stakeholders across trading, regulatory affairs, sales, and data management by attending at least three collaborative discussions or cross-functional meetings. You will provide at least two data-backed insights during weekly performance reviews, contributing to trading strategy discussions. You will complete training on key reporting tools (Tableau, Python, Excel) to improve forecasting accuracy and automation.

Within 90 days, you will take full ownership of routine reporting and performance reviews for the North America Trading team, ensuring timely and accurate delivery with minimal supervision. You will produce at least three actionable insights using Tableau, Python, and Excel, successfully integrating them into trading strategies with feedback from the trading team. You will deliver at least one preliminary supply and demand forecast model using third-party data, refining it with feedback from the Manager of Market Analysis. You will demonstrate domain fluency in LCFS and CCA markets by contributing a market-impact analysis or model refinement proposal.

Within 6 months, you will deliver at least three data-driven recommendations implemented by the trading team, establishing yourself as a primary source of analytical insight. You will proactively identify and address inefficiencies in trading performance or forecasting models, proposing improvements backed by quantitative analysis. You will lead at least two rounds of back testing and refining proprietary models to enhance forecast accuracy, validated by the trading team.

Within 1 year, you will deliver and implement at least five strategic recommendations, establishing yourself as a trusted thought partner for the trading team. You will enhance trading accuracy and portfolio performance by refining forecasting models, integrating real-time market trends, and improving risk assessment strategies.
