Ocean: knowledge for a responsible and sustainable ocean development Chalmers’ strong maritime heritage traces back to the establishment of the university and our geographical location in Gothenburg, the largest port in Scandinavia. Today, most of our departments have research, education, and utilization related to the marine and maritime domain, contributing to the grand challenges associated with human utilization of the oceans and marine resources.
Aligning with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, Chalmers is now consolidating the thematic area Ocean, addressing a wide range of aspects of ocean economy. These aspects include naval architecture and ocean engineering, marine renewable energy, maritime environmental science, marine biomasses and blue bioeconomy, remote sensing, environmental monitoring, and surveillance, e.g. in the Arctic, and risk assessment of human activities at sea and marine spatial planning.
Chalmers is an active part of the marine/maritime community nationally and internationally, providing excellent opportunities for networking (e.g. Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment (SIME), Swedish Maritime Competence Centre Lighthouse, Centre for future seafood Blue Food). Our research community has access to a wide range of marine research infrastructures, both internally at Chalmers (e.g. the laboratory for automotive related research REVERE, the materials analysis laboratory CMAL, Laboratory of fluids and thermal science) and through our networks (e.g. Kristineberg Center, and the research vessels at SWERVE).
