SLAC’s Facilities and Operations Division manages one of the world’s premier science facilities on Stanford site with 150+ structures for the Department of Energy (DOE). Our Sustainability & Energy Management group is seeking a Mechanical Engineer experienced in energy efficiency & sustainability to join our group. In this role you will be performing energy engineering studies, including energy and water audits, feasibility studies for cost effective GHG reduction, building benchmarking and retro-commissioning analysis.

You will gain knowledge on Department of Energy sustainability goals and directives and advocate for cost-effective initiatives across multiple disciplines at SLAC. Our group teams closely with engineers and project managers supporting both the high-energy scientific and conventional facilities.

Your specific responsibilities include

  • Utilize guidance from the DOE Sustainability Program Office to formulate recommendations advocating for cost-effective sustainability and GHG reduction initiatives for SLAC.
  • Collaborate closely to provide sustainability and energy efficiency expertise with engineers in mechanical, instrumentation, HVAC, operations and Office of Project management.
  • Perform energy engineering responsibilities and act as the deputy site energy manager.
  • Perform energy/water audits, calculations and reports in conformance with ASHRAE Level I & II standards and re-commissioning where applicable.
  • Study lighting and HVAC Building Automation System (BAS) for multiple campus facilities to confirm adherence with ASHRAE energy efficiency, ventilation/thermal control standards, and CA Title 24 energy code.
  • Track data regularly on various utility metering platforms and update budget forecasts.
  • Plan, research, formulate, and prepare project analyses in area of expertise.
  • Provide assessment, design, and technical recommendations; may include leading project development and implementation.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze projects' technical plans and specifications for sound design, conformance with design guidelines and other related criteria, and pertinent codes or standards.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree Mechanical Engineering, or other related relevant engineering discipline. Minimum five years of directly related experience.
  • Proficiency with analyzing energy consuming systems in buildings and facilities and energy/water audits/re-commissioning and creating energy conservation measures with life-cycle cost analysis.
  • Technical familiarity with sustainability metrics and reporting including GHG, carbon-free-emissions, renewable energy credits, energy-use-intensity, LEED credits, etc.
  • Technical familiarity with campus mechanical infrastructural systems including, energy/water metering and analytics, natural gas heating systems, cooling towers, process cooling water systems, HVAC, etc.
  • Demonstrated skills in planning/ /implementing/managing on-site upgrade projects.
  • Familiarity with a scientific research facility or a campus environment.
  • Experience participating actively in technical and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization.
  • Knowledge of scheduling, project management, and financial budgeting software tools
  • Proficiency with standard desktop applications for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Preferred Requirements

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification
  • Advanced degree in engineering, or related discipline

The expected pay range for this position is $108,000 to $131,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
