Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world's transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people's quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.
Kairos Power is seeking a Facilities Electrical Technician with building infrastructure and general electrical expertise supporting industrial, commercial and/or R&D facilities. This position will be located at the Kairos Power Southwest facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico and will report into the Facilities Department. You will support a variety of facilities maintenance tasks across the site including performing inspections, installations, repairs, replacements, and other general tasks on existing facility infrastructure. The individual will also conduct testing, operations, troubleshooting, and mechanical work in support of the engineering teams on site. The ideal candidate will have experience performing electrical installations and maintenance on HVAC systems, R&D/engineering test equipment, manufacturing equipment, and other commercial building systems including fire protection, fire alarms, access control, security cameras, and security alarms.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical guidance in collaboration with internal facilities, construction, engineering and project teams.
- Oversee the electrical integrity of facility power, lighting, HVAC, and building management system (BMS) systems up to 600V, performing maintenance, operations, construction, repairs, and testing on facility electrical distribution systems rated 600V and below, including associated testing and manufacturing equipment.
- Perform electrical work on minor projects including new branch circuits 0-600V, plus installation of transformers, panels, disconnects, & circuit breakers.
- Perform lockout/tagout to isolate components and de-energize equipment.
- Identify new and existing circuits; label devices and panels; and update panel schedules and documentation.
- Layout and install electrical devices, power distribution equipment, and wiring systems.
- Test, troubleshoot, and repair malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components by using electrical test equipment (voltmeters, ohmmeters, insulation testers, toners, etc.) and utilize print reading skills to understand as-built conditions and new work requirements.
- Maintain low voltage systems including access control, alarm, and security systems.
- Perform skilled maintenance tasks encompassing inspections, operations, installation, and troubleshooting of building equipment such as bridge cranes and dock equipment.
- Manage small electrical projects, work orders, and preventive maintenance tasks using computerized management maintenance systems (CMMS) and smartphone app-based systems.
- Document and communicate results of preventive maintenance tasks including visual inspections, defect detection, hazard identification, and code compliance.
- Prepare and complete preventive maintenance requests, deficiency reports, and work order using computer-based systems.
- Develop an understanding of the site's non-utility owned 12 kV power systems and perform troubleshooting on the systems
- Provide effective and timely customer service to internal clients and team members.
- Comply with national, local, and company safety codes, procedures, policies and practices.
- Support emergency response activities for electrical failures, outages, and life-safety system issues, including participation in on-call or after-hours response as required.
- Assist with coordination of electrical inspections and audits.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying recurring equipment issues, recommending corrective actions, and contributing to reliability and safety improvements.
- Assist with maintaining accurate electrical documentation, including as-built drawings and equipment records, in coordination with engineering and facilities teams.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and completion of related accredited program or equivalent work experience in industrial or commercial facilities maintenance, with emphasis on electrical trades. Current or previous electrician license is a plus
- 3+ years of experience working with electrical, power, HVAC or related systems in industrial, commercial and/or R&D facilities
- Experience testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and repairing lighting & lighting controls.
- Experience in reading and interpreting electrical wiring diagrams, drawings, schematics, & specifications.
- Experience with Building Management System (BMS), Building Automation System (BAS), Energy Management System (EMS), and/or HVAC Systems troubleshooting.
- Experience with emergency and standby electrical systems (UPS/inverters, backup generators, automatic and manual transfer devices).
- Edwards EST Fire Alarm System familiarity and troubleshooting experience is a plus
- Field experience wearing and working in an arc flash 40 cal/cm2 suit.
- Must have experience maintaining an electrically safe workplace utilizing NFPA 70E as a safety standard; intermediate knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC), OSHA and EPA regulations, and adherence to applicable Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) laws and regulations is also required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to maintain, inspect, operate, install, repair, replace, test, and troubleshoot electrical components.
- Ability to oversee electrical commissioning, testing, and maintenance activities performed by consultants and electrical testing contractors.
- Strong understanding of busway power distribution systems, plus grounding and bonding for specialized laboratory and manufacturing equipment.
- Understanding of devices used to transform power between North American and International standard voltages and frequency, plus awareness of different wire insulation colors and symbols.
- Customer service and interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively in writing and verbally with technical, administrative, and management personnel.
- Ability to work effectively independently and as a team member.
- Strong computer-based skills including ability to utilize software to create and update work orders, send and receive e-mails and internal messages, participate in computer-based training, web-based meetings, and utilize internal company applications.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles and be insured on company vehicles
- Knowledge of electrical safety risk assessment and hazard mitigation practices consistent with NFPA 70E and OSHA standards.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple work orders and maintenance activities in a dynamic operational environment.
- Analytical skills to diagnose complex electrical system issues and determine effective corrective actions.
- Attention to detail and documentation accuracy when performing inspections, labeling, and compliance-related tasks.
