Sublime is advancing a breakthrough, clean, efficient, low-waste process for manufacturing cement, the essential ingredient in the most-consumed human-made material on Earth: concrete. Replacing 200-year-old manufacturing methods that are reliant on kilns running hotter than lava, our near-ambient-temperature, electrochemical technology manufactures industry-accepted cement and critical minerals. We're partnering with leading general contractors, concrete producers, developers, and technology hyperscalers to deploy our clean, durable, beautiful Sublime Cement?? in infrastructure that is defining the future of clean construction. Backed by some of the world's largest cement producers, leading private investors, and the U.S. Department of Energy, we are assembling a talented, collaborative team that is "amped about cement" (pun intended) and committed to operating on the frontiers of material science, manufacturing, industry, construction, and commercial partnerships, to advance cement innovation that will endure for the next millennium.

Position Overview

Sublime Systems is seeking a creative and motivated Engineering Co-op to support the dynamic operations of the Sublime Systems pilot plant. The pilot plant is in a key position within the company, scaling up R&D technologies in preparation for commercialization while also producing significant quantities of Sublime materials for further research, development, and use. In this role, you will learn to operate our pilot plant using an HMI, take and analyze process samples, and aid in the collection of data as we develop and scale up processes. You will also help to maintain pilot equipment, implement process improvements, and execute experiments to inform scale-up decisions.

This role is expected to be hands-on, with a significant amount of time spent engaging in pilot operation and troubleshooting. Successful candidates will be results-driven, ambitious, organized, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.

The ideal candidate will have

  • A strong sense for chemical safety, organization, and attention to detail
  • Previous internship and/or lab experience
  • An eagerness for hands-on work and for learning new processes and unit operations
  • The ability to make keen observations on process anomalies, recommend process improvements, and articulate findings

This is a paid full-time (40 hr/wk) in-person position located in Somerville, MA.

Responsibilities Include

  • Daily operation of the pilot system, controlled with a PLC system through an HMI
  • Perform necessary pre-operation and end-of-shift activities to ensure proper equipment startup and operation on multiple pieces of equipment. This will include reactors, pumps, agitators, filter presses, etc.
  • Participate in the sample preparation, analysis, and interpretation of lab- and pilot-scale data
  • Participate in downstream product processing
  • Document process operations
  • Perform hands-on troubleshooting and repair of pilot equipment
  • Perform routine investigative teardowns of process equipment to capture physical materials characteristics
  • Assist in the design and documentation of new pilot projects
  • Facilitate installation and assembly of new equipment
  • Maintain pilot plant conditions in a fashion that facilitates cleanliness and productivity
  • Move reasonably sized drums of chemicals and packages of raw materials by hand or using a hand pallet jack (no forklift operation)

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Actively pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Industrial Engineering or a related field
  • Knowledge of and passion for applying engineering fundamentals to chemical plant design and operation
  • Able to lift objects up to 50lbs, climb ladders, and work on step stools
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail, focusing on accuracy and quality, without losing sight of the bigger picture
  • Balance, perspective, and a good sense of humor
