Job Description

The Superintendent is responsible for overseeing field operations on multiple projects, crews, and scopes of work simultaneously to achieve timely and profitable completion. They will assist their General Foreman and Foreman daily to resolve issues, make sound decisions, as well as provide information and drive coordination to ensure work is executed safely and in the most efficient and effective manner. The Superintendent is also responsible for keeping the Project Manager accurately and fully informed of the field status of projects, particularly with regards to cost, schedule, quality, safety, and problems/issues. You can reside in Los Angeles/Orange/San Bernardino/Riverside Counties.

Primary Responsibilities & Duties

  • Partner with the Safety Manager & Sr. Project Manager to help always maintain a proactive safety culture/attitude and safe work environment on projects:
    • Ensuring all safety training and documentation (IIPP, JHA, SSSP, etc.) is completed prior to all work beginning.
    • Instituting and participating in Weekly Toolbox Safety Meetings and performing regular project safety inspections to confirm the SSSP and Cal Solar Safety Guidelines are being adhered to in the performance of the work.
    • Helping review/address all unsafe conditions, near misses & accidents/incidents, promptly applying corrective actions to mitigate and prevent reoccurrence.
    • Assisting with updating, creating, & implementing safety policies and procedures.
  • Help create and execute Safety & Work Plans for all major tasks including Building Outage, Crane hoists, etc.
  • Support the creation of General Conditions / General Requirements (GC/GR) before contract execution, especially on retrofit bids where fencing, bathrooms, etc. will be required.
  • Participate in retrofit bid pre-design site surveys, design review, and pre-permitting meetings with Engineering teams, offering input regarding constructability and safety items, and supporting the creation of General Conditions / General Requirements (GC/GRs).
  • Participate in Pre-Mobilization Meetings (preconstruction-to-construction hand-off) to ensure accurate and high-quality designs and plans have been established, identifying any issues pertaining to constructability, schedule, materials, labor capability/availability, site logistics, crane-pick locations, etc.
  • Perform pre-mobilization jobsite walks in advance of field crew mobilization, confirming there are no potential field-conditions that could impact the effectiveness and timeliness of executing the work.
  • Oversee start-up and preplanning of projects with the Project Foreman on all assigned projects.
  • Partner with the Procurement Manager and General Foreman to forecast BOM procurements for accuracy & lead times, and maintain visibility on truck/storage stock levels, to ensure projects consistently have the necessary equipment/materials to successfully execute the work. Communicate any field deficiencies in a timely manner.
  • Provide daily oversight of Miter timecard entry and Raken reporting required by Foreman, making certain that the correct project, labor code, and hours are being entered by field employees. Work with the Payroll Department to resolve problems timely.
  • Partner with the Labor Compliance department to ensure that labor requirements are met on all projects.
  • Provide leadership and training to the field teams in the execution of the work, ensuring the highest quality of craftmanship is achieved to avoid re-work, and encouraging the implementation of new field methods and procedures.
  • Help train & monitor the General Foreman and Foreman on the timely creation (minimum of 2-weeks prior to mobilization) of the Field Labor Tracker (FLT) spreadsheet.
  • Coordinate with the client, GC & subcontractors to ensure critical path activities occur in a timely manner and that the overall work is completed in accordance with the overall project scope and schedule.
  • Interface and coordinate with the client, GC, and/or subcontractors on items that impact our work (rough in conduit, power, low voltage, framing/blocking, etc.) to avoid field conflicts/problems and ensure proper installation occurs. Work with Cal Solar Project Manager to pursue resolutions in a timely and professional manner.
  • Help identify change-conditions to the work that create cost and/or schedule impacts are acted upon timely (change ordering pricing, T&M ticketing, etc.), including documentation of schedule updates, fragnets, etc.
  • Keep the Project Manager & Engineering team up to date on any field changes, and have full construction change mark-ups ready 4-6 weeks in advance of final inspection if resubmission to AHJ is required.
  • Lead weekly FLT review meetings of hours used & units installed, comparing results to budgeted production rates, identifying potential issues/concerns/overruns, and timely implementation of solutions. Share production rates with the Estimating team to improve accuracy of future bids.
  • Monitor material and equipment usage against budgets; identify cost-saving opportunities & cost-overrun risks. Work with Project Manager to understand/track all favors, risks, and opportunities, ensuring opportunities are maximized and risks minimized.
  • Ensure that the Foreman has all necessary plan sets, permits, job cards, etc. and verify that as-built drawings are kept current.
  • Develop, communicate, monitor, and update execution plan throughout duration of projects to ensure schedule adherence (with minimum 3-week "look ahead"), and forecast manpower/crew-size needs, material deliveries, etc. to avoid impacts to schedules or budgets.
  • Conduct routine jobsite meetings/visits with General Foreman and Foreman to review means and methods, schedule status, help with problem solving of day-to-day challenges, management of sub-subcontractors, and coordination with other subcontractors to make / coordinate cost-effective decisions regarding manpower, equipment, and material.
  • Confirm accurate completion of pre-commissioning reports, as-builts, IX photos, etc. and coordinate necessary manpower for utility visits/inspections, to enable projects to move timely through all post-mechanical completion stages.
  • Maintain strong understanding of manpower needs for each project to assist the General Superintendent with short term & long-term manpower projection/planning.
  • Participate in project post-mortem meetings, providing feedback on lessons-learned & issues experienced that can be implemented by the Preconstruction & Construction teams on future projects.

Key Qualifications & Required Skills/Abilities

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in commercial/industrial solar construction.
  • Experience with construction management, in both self-performing and sub-subcontracting.
  • Strong understanding of the NEC (wire sizing, equipment ratings, installation requirements, etc.), NFPA 70E electrical safety guidelines, and plumbing code, with ability to reference these codes as required.
  • Working knowledge of Uniform Building Code (UBC) and building materials/techniques.
  • Strong understanding of grid-tied PV, solar domestic hot water, piping systems, pumped fluid circuits, and closed-loop heating systems.
  • Ability to read, understand, problem-solve, implement site-redesign, and mark-up (redline) electrical, plumbing, and structural plans.
  • Experience working directly with city/county permitting offices and inspectors.
  • OSHA-30 certification & JW Electrical Licensed, preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills/mindset.
  • Excellent organizational, attention to detail/process, analytical/problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Possess a positive attitude, ability to work independently, show initiative, and operate with a sense of urgency.
  • Excellent time management skills - ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, delegate, and support multiple projects in various stages of preconstruction & construction.
