Job Description
Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.
Responsibilities
- Safety Equipment Management and Maintenance
- Prepares and/or calibrates equipment used to collect or analyze samples.
- Maintains inventory and supply of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Prepares and/or reviews specifications or orders for the purchase of safety equipment, ensuring that proper features are present and that items conform to health and safety standards.
- Hazard Assessment and Risk Management
- Works with SPF team on risk assessments and job hazard analyses to identify and mitigate potential safety hazards as applicable with a first-of-a-kind plant.
- Performs workplace testing to identify hazards, including chemical or biological exposures and excessive noise, using appropriate testing methods and specialized equipment.
- Conducts audits and workplace inspections to identify potential safety hazards and environmental risks, track and trend findings, and close-out identified items, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and policies.
- Ensures proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Conducts weekly inspections of fire suppression systems and portable fire systems to ensure proper functioning.
- Identifies, monitors, and manages potential hazards associated with various chemicals and gases in a workplace or industrial setting, ensuring employee safety and compliance with applicable regulations and policies by understanding the specific properties and risks of different chemicals and gases.
- Incident Response and Investigation
- Responds to reports of incidents, accidents, injuries, and near-misses, assisting employees in seeking medical attention, if necessary.
- Investigates workplace incidents, near misses, and accidents, and recommends corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Policy Development and Compliance
- Develops, implements, and monitors workplace safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies.
- Assists with developing and updating policies and procedures for various EHS programs, such as Hazard Communication, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Spill Response, Emergency Response, etc.
- Gathers and reviews various information, records, data, and reports to better inform the development of EHS policies and procedures and ensure compliance.
- Examines credentials, licenses, or permits to ensure compliance with licensing requirements.
- Stays current with changes in health, safety, and environmental regulations and industry best practices.
- Training and Employee Support
- Leads safety training programs for employees, including hazard communication, personal protective equipment (PPE), confined space entry, and emergency response; works with internal L&D team to support any new safety training that would be needed.
- Provides guidance and support for environmental, health, and/or safety concerns raised by employees.
- Emergency Preparedness
- Develops and implements emergency response plans, including chemical spill response and evacuation procedures for SPF.
- Coordinates emergency drills and train employees on emergency response protocols.
- Supports site emergency response/preparedness team in responding to various emergencies and/or spills.
- Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
- Works with management to improve the facility’s safety and environmental performance through monitoring and modifying programs to respond to all concerns.
- Proactively builds relationships with other departments and function groups.
- Recordkeeping and Technical Documentation
- Maintains logs of daily activities, including areas visited or activities performed.
- Performs recordkeeping and reporting responsibilities for various environmental, health, and safety programs.
- Supports development of technical working documents or other documents (like SDS) associated with chemicals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry or a related field.
- 3+ years of professional experience in environmental health and safety or a related field with a proven track record of safety.
- Experience conducting incident investigations and performing root cause analyses.
- Experience with conducting environment, health and safety risk assessments and implementing corrective actions.
- Experience evaluating health and safety risks associated with different gases based on their chemical properties (preferred).
- Working experience with OSHA PSM including 14 elements (preferred).
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret occupational safety and environmental regulations, such as OSHA, EPA, NFPA, NIOSH, ANSI and relevant local standards.
- Effective communication and training skills to promote safety and environmental awareness.
- Ability to analyze data and prepare detailed reports related to health, safety, and environmental performance.
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple ongoing tasks.
- Ability to work with a diverse variety of people and ensure safety of all employees while meeting company’s critical mission timelines.
- Ability to use a personal computer and applicable software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) to accomplish tasks.
- Ability to work with highly collaborative team.
- Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.
- Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others.
- Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge.
- Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues.
Physical Conditions
- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and the like
- Setting up and transferring temporary structures (e.g. scaffolding, ladders)
