At Northland, we’re enablers of change, united by our journey to transform the energy sector into the foundation for a sustainable future.

Since our inception, we’ve been early movers in the energy industry, adopting new initiatives that pave the way for communities across the globe and helping forge their path towards a carbon-neutral landscape.

We’re a different kind of independent power producer. As developers, owners and operators who are at the forefront of the energy transition, we’re uniquely positioned to leave a lasting impact in the regions where we operate. We’ve expanded our business across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia to become a global leader, all by bringing together industry experts to find solutions with an entrepreneurial mindset.

While our work powers communities across the globe, Northland is powered by our people.

As FP&A Manager, you will be responsible for leading the BU FP&A function and providing financial insights and guidance to BU senior management and key stakeholders. You will “Northlandize” and maintain error-free financial models and provide business decision support for all financial, operational and strategic matters across the BU through ad hoc business case analysis. Reporting directly to the Senior Director & Divisional CFO, you will work closely with various teams within the business unit (financial accounting & reporting, operations, development) and across the global finance teams (project finance, treasury, tax). You will also collaborate closely with the VP, Corporate FP&A.

This role will be based in Toronto, and you will be expected to work from our Corporate office a minimum of 4 times a week in line with our hybrid work model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Finance Managers of Natural Gas and Utility to maintain awareness of key business activities, performance trends, and emerging opportunities and risks, ensuring solid understanding of the business, assets and operating models.
  • Maintain dynamic dashboards and reports to ensure the Divisional CFO has full and meaningful insight into the BU’s performance, financial position, key KPIs and risks on a monthly basis.
  • Maintain tracking of BU’s SG&A and devex spend.
  • Lead the 5-year forecast and long-term business planning for the entire BU in collaboration with the Divisional CFO and Corporate FP&A; ensure earnings, free cash flow and distributions to shareholders are accurately modeled at the project level and consolidated BU level.
  • Conduct ad hoc business case analysis and modelling which can include various sensitivities, revenue contract extensions, facility expansions and upgrades, etc. to project long term growth, determine the impacting business factors and assist the BU in decision making.
  • Work closely with Corporate FP&A in shaping the best FP&A practices to drive continuous improvement of financial processes and systems.
  • Own, maintain and “Northlandize” the utility asset’s long-term model, working with Treasury and Risk Oversight team for financing and hedging assumptions.
  • Provide routine and ad hoc support related to financial reporting, debt compliance and cash management for the utility asset.

Who You Are

  • Methodical and organized: You naturally work in a methodical way and relish the opportunity to add structure and order to your work. This will help with the competing priorities you will be managing.
  • Collaborative: You enjoy working as a team to get things done and have the ability to easily develop cross-functional partnerships both within and outside of Finance.
  • Diligent: Your solid attention to detail will ensure the accuracy and quality of your work.
  • Creative: You use open thinking to generate and support new or better ways of doing things and can recommend tools and processes to help us scale for the future.
  • Flexible: You are agile in your approach to your work and in working hours, after all you will be working alongside colleagues in other countries.
  • Eager and adaptable: You are eager to learn and expand your skillset and are comfortable adapting to changing priorities in a highly fast-paced and deadline-driven environment.
  • A strong communicator: You have exceptional oral and written communication skills and are able to articulate complex financial information (both written and verbal) in a clear and concise manner.
  • A problem-solver and decision-maker: You proactively identify hurdles and obstacles in your end-goal and are able to assess complex situations and make effective recommendations.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, or a related field. CPA, CFA or other advanced designation.
  • 5+ years of experience in any of the following disciplines: FP&A, corporate development or financial reporting.
  • Experience with financial planning platforms (Workday Adaptive, or others).
  • Experience working with a public company.
  • Proficient knowledge and use of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Outlook and Word. Power BI experience is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, external/internal financial metrics, valuation concepts, financial analysis, and reports.
