About the business unit
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.
Overview of role
Based within the fast-growing energy modelling team within the Energy Unit, you will support and contribute to projects working for companies and governments in a global arena spanning different types of topics. The team sits in the middle of different engineering teams, receiving a broad exposure to all the different domains of the energy industry. You will help to collect, analyse and distil the findings from the different teams within generation, transmission and distribution systems.
The main duties include but are not limited to
- Generation Expansion Planning with techno-economic optimization in the presence of high penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES).
- Modelling of high-RES systems in presence of battery storages, flexible demand, electric vehicle and power-to-gas.
- Implementing cutting-edge optimization techniques for running Monte Carlo simulations on RES production output, grid outages and maintenance planning.
- Techno-economic optimisation of generation and transmission capital projects using optimisation software tools such as Plexos.
- Prepare report and present results to prospective clients (including governments, international agencies, utilities).
Candidate Specification
The successful applicant will have the following attributes:
- Master’s degree in a quantitative field as energy/electrical engineering, statistics, economics – with demonstrable experience in energy modelling.
- Robust knowledge of energy systems (generation and transmission).
- Experience in Operation Research/Optimization, predictive modelling, or machine learning.
- Proficient in statistical data analysis and data mining tools such as R, Python, Matlab or Excel.
- Experience in using Plexos and/or other generation planning software tools (Antares, GAMS, TIMES, BID3, etc).
- Proven problem-solving skill and ability to process large amounts of information and present the findings in a clear and logical way.

- Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills (English).
- Sharp analytical skills and the ability to present quantitative knowledge to non-experts.
- Self-motivated and diligent, with ability to meet tight deadlines on simultaneous assignments.
- Attentive to detail, an active listener, with a strong aptitude for the wider picture.
- Prepared to travel, sometimes at short notice, as required by projects and new business opportunities.

- Mott MacDonald Group operates an incentive scheme for employees on standard terms and conditions with a minimum six-month service at the end of the previous financial year. The scheme is non-contractual and targeted at exceptional contributors but includes a fixed element in which all eligible staff (grades A-E) share.
- The scheme includes General Bonus, Performance Bonus and Annual Salary Review
- Bonus Payments are normally made in March each year.
- The performance related bonus is of around 3.5% salary for employees demonstrating excellent performance though not only a certain number of employees get this every year.
- We do an annual salary review based on market changes
