Job Description
The Technical Manager is a key role within the Non-Regulated Business, responsible for delivering heat, storage, and data centre projects across the UK. The role focuses on defining and implementing robust, cost-effective engineering strategies, managing internal and external interfaces, and overseeing design functions. It includes managing multiple contractors, setting engineering standards and technical acceptance criteria, and ensuring quality, best practices, and strong H&S performance throughout all project phases.
Supporting the Non-Regulated business’s growth, the role contributes to decarbonisation efforts through initiatives like eHeat Networks Ltd, which targets large-scale decarbonisation of buildings and the development of data centres and long-duration storage. The Technical Manager provides engineering excellence to shape the strategy and development of the heat business and other emerging opportunities.
What you'll be doing
- Support the development of a robust project pipeline aligned with strategic growth targets.
- Provide strategic engineering advice and oversee design, quality, and compliance across all project phases.
- Lead engineering standards, certification strategies, and technical acceptance criteria to ensure best value and regulatory compliance.
- Manage contractor and supply chain relationships, ensuring competitive, timely solutions.
- Drive innovation by evaluating new technologies and methods to improve safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
- Define and resource engineering teams to deliver projects on time and within budget.
- Ensure rigorous inspection, commissioning, and quality control of heat network assets.
- Act as the engineering focal point across all new business opportunities.
- Influence policy and regulatory frameworks, representing the business in industry forums and working groups.
- Promote cross-industry learning, share best practices, and lead continuous improvement.
- Monitor trends, report on pipeline opportunities, and support network expansion strategies.
- Provide on-site technical solutions to mitigate engineering risks and delays.
What you'll bring
- Relevant engineering experience and/or qualifications (e.g. Engineering Degree, Chartered Engineer).
- Expert in plant, apparatus, control, and protection systems design, construction, and commissioning.
- Strong knowledge of industry contracts (FIDIC, NEC, JCT), especially in energy and district heating.
- Proven ability to manage complex, multi-disciplinary projects with strong commercial, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Skilled in balancing technical detail with commercial impact and making informed engineering decisions.
- Effective communicator with strong influencing and negotiation skills across senior levels and external stakeholders.
- Deep understanding of health & safety, regulatory issues, and quality standards.
- Experienced in developing innovative engineering solutions, including 5th generation heat networks.
- Capable of delivering designs under pressure and translating complex concepts into practical solutions.
- Committed to continuous improvement, industry engagement, and fostering cross-functional collaboration.
Minimum Criteria
- Relevant degree or equivalent experience, ideally with Chartered Engineer status.
- Extensive experience in the energy sector, including leading engineering teams and developing processes.
- Deep understanding of engineering standards and contract/programme management for multi-million-pound projects.
- Proven ability in conceptual engineering, tender development, and delivery under complex conditions.
- Strong leadership in people, change, quality, and risk management.
- Well-developed influencing and negotiation skills at senior levels.
