Job Description

The mission of Hanwha Energy USA's Government Affairs team is to grow America's energy infrastructure and create new business opportunities through proactive policy advocacy and relationship-building. The Director of Government Affairs is a strategic leader responsible for enabling Hanwha's U.S. market expansion by shaping regulatory policy and energy market structures, supporting project development, growing Hanwha's relationships, and driving government affairs strategies at the federal and state levels.

The ideal candidate has deep expertise in policies affecting energy markets and project development, strong relationships in government, and a track record of shaping outcomes that support renewable energy growth. This role will interface with federal and state agencies, RTOs/ISOs, congressional and state legislative offices, and key external stakeholders.

This position will be reporting to the Vice President, Government Affairs.

Responsibilities

Regulatory & Market Strategy

  • Champion Hanwha Energy USA's regulatory strategy with federal agencies (FERC, DOE, DOI, DOW/DOD), RTOs/ISOs, and related state agencies as needed.
  • Shape and influence wholesale market rules related to rates, interconnection, transmission planning, and storage participation.
  • Evaluate policy developments to assess commercial impact and guide executive decision-making.
  • Represent Hanwha Energy USA in rulemaking processes, technical conferences, stakeholder groups, and formal filings.

Government Affairs & Legislative Strategy

  • Execute federal government affairs strategy aligned with corporate growth objectives.
  • Drive advocacy efforts on federal legislation impacting energy development, including tax incentives, permitting reforms, government energy procurement, and transmission investment.
  • Build and manage relationships with congressional offices, committees, federal agencies, and national trade organizations.
  • Develop policy positions, talking points, testimony, and executive briefings.

Market Development & Business Enablement

  • Identify and advance external market conditions that support project development and long-term growth.
  • Provide early intelligence on market risks, opportunities, and emerging policy landscapes.
  • Collaborate with Development, Regulatory, Legal, and Commercial teams to align advocacy with commercial strategy.
  • Support project siting, permitting, and community engagement strategies as needed.

Leadership & Cross-Functional Influence

  • Represent Hanwa Energy in policy matters across the U.S. energy ecosystem.
  • Lead internal education on regulatory updates, advocacy priorities, and market design.
  • Manage external consultants, trade association participation, and industry coalitions.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in government affairs, regulatory affairs, energy market policy, or related energy-sector leadership roles. Prior government experience strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of key policy issues affecting energy project development, such as energy market policies, interconnection and transmission planning processes, project permitting, government energy procurement, and tax incentives.
  • Strong relationships with decision-makers within federal agencies and Capitol Hill.
  • Exceptional communication and executive presence.
  • Prior leadership experience within renewable energy, grid planning, or storage technology.
  • Advanced degree in Public Policy, Law, Business, Energy Economics, Engineering, or related field preferred.

Compensation

$210,000 - $250,000 salary
