PowerAmerica is a member-driven Manufacturing USA Institute, headquartered at NC State University, that conducts research, development, and education in the field of semiconductor chips and power electronics manufacturing. PowerAmerica is dedicated to accelerating the development and demonstration of advanced semiconductors that are deployed in applications including electric vehicles, data centers, consumer electronics, motor drives, power grid, and renewable energy systems. PowerAmerica works with its 63 industry, 23 university, and 5 national lab members to carry out its mission. Education of the next generation of semiconductor manufacturing workers is an important part of the PowerAmerica mission.

Essential Job Duties

The Education Program manager is responsible for planning, organizing, and carrying out all aspects of the PowerAmerica Education and Workforce Development Program. This may include Technician Training Partnerships, Chip Fabrication Boot Camps, UG student scholarships, internships, apprenticeships, and other student and manufacturing worker training activities. This important position touches all aspects of the PowerAmerica education program and has a direct impact on one of the institute’s core functions. The Education Program Manager must articulate a vision for PowerAmerica’s education program that is ambitious and achievable and promulgate that vision to participants and PowerAmerica members. Working closely with PowerAmerica staff, the Education Program Manager will be responsible for preparing the annual education program plan and will ensure that the center’s education commitments to the Department of Energy (DoE) are met and that the strategic goals of PowerAmerica are addressed. The manager must also work with his/her counterparts in the research programs of the institute to ensure that students are fully engaged with those activities in a meaningful way. In addition to managing the education program activities, the Education Program Manager serves as the liaison between PowerAmerica and the other Manufacturing USA institute education managers.

Specifically, the Education Program Manager will plan, execute, and report on the following PowerAmerica activities:

  • Research experiences for undergraduates
  • Chip Fabrication Boot Camp
  • Technician Training Partnership (community college)
  • PowerAmerica Fellowships
  • Undergraduate Scholars programs
  • Lead efforts to expand program participation and ensure broad representation.
  • Liaison with the other DoE manufacturing institutes’ education managers
  • Conduct education program assessments
  • Coordinate education activities with industry members
  • Survey the worker and training needs of companies in the NC semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
  • Lead research, assessment, and dissemination efforts to continually improve and innovate in education programs.

Other Responsibilities

The Education Manager will create new programs and initiatives that help PowerAmerica meet its strategic objectives. The Education manager must also coordinate the education program activities with the other Manufacturing USA Institutes and ensure that program offerings are high quality and appropriate. The education manager is also responsible for collecting appropriate data and regular reporting on the education program.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s degree in STEM education discipline or a scientific or professional field related to clean energy or environmental science with at least one year of education program development and coordination; or a Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience related to education program development and coordination.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Ability to plan, organize, and execute various education and workforce development programs
  • Proficiency in strategic planning to develop and prepare the annual education program plan.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to serve as a liaison between PowerAmerica and other Manufacturing USA institute education managers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in education or a scientific or engineering discipline related to clean energy.
  • Experience in education program development at the university and community college levels.
  • Experience with outreach, program assessment and partnership development.
