The Job

As a Trading Meteorologist your role will comprise applied research into global weather patterns, data analysis and visualization, and communication of weather signals. You will ideally work on the trading floor, directly with a team of meteorologists, market analysts and energy traders, and take leading role in providing market insights to support commercial decision making.

What we are looking for / Role Responsibilities

  • Monitor and interpret weather data from various sources to provide accurate and timely weather forecasts.
  • Provide real-time updates on global model runs, sharing insights on impacts to energy demand and renewable generation.
  • Forecast optimization for direct marketing of the renewable energy portfolio (solar, wind) Week Ahead to Intraday
  • Build up databases containing meteorological parameters and historical forecasts for model back testing and detailed analysis
  • Develop and maintain weather-based power load forecasts and models to inform the hedging strategy and shape management for the E.ON sales portfolio in Europe
  • Proactively initiate discussions with the wider team, collaborating with traders and portfolio managers to share insights and develop trading strategies.
  • Keep up to date with latest developments in academic research, weather forecasting technology and vendor products.

Who we are seeking / Role qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field
  • Comprehensive understanding of sub-seasonal forecasting and numerical weather prediction
  • Interpretation of satellite images for nowcasting changes in solar power production
  • Knowledge of advantages and drawbacks of different forecasting systems (IFS, UKMO, GFS, etc.) beneficial
  • Excellent Python coding skills for data analysis, with machine learning knowledge beneficial
  • Excellent research skills and strong knowledge of statistics
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas in plain language
  • Ability to work occasionally on bank holidays or weekends
