Job Description

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced Grants Finance Manager to join our Finance & Operations team.

The Grants Finance Manager is responsible for ensuring that all grant funding is tracked, allocated, and spent in alignment with funder requirements. A key member of the Finance & Operations team & Development team, this role also works closely with Program Directors to build grant budgets, monitor spending, and prepare financial reports.

The Grants Finance Manager maintains a clear, organization-wide view of how grants support programs, staff, and operations. They help program staff understand available funding and identify gaps. This position also builds and improves systems for tracking grant finances across multiple funding sources.

GEM is funded primarily through a complex portfolio of restricted program grants, alongside a growing base of more flexible funding. As the organization has scaled, so has the need for stronger systems and clearer visibility into how funds are managed. This role plays a central part in building and maintaining that infrastructure by creating reliable, organization-wide insight into how grants support programs and staff, while improving the tools and processes that support planning, compliance, and decision-making across teams.

The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge, Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

  • Ensure that financials match the narratives of grant reports.
  • Track deadlines and restrictions to keep grants in compliance.

  • Support for contract management and misc. grant administration.

Grant Portfolio Oversight

  • Maintain a full picture of all grant funding across the organization.
  • Track which programs, roles, and costs each grant supports.
  • Build simple month-by-month views of funding and expenses. Grow this to include 3-year funding projections by program.
  • Help teams use this information for planning and fundraising.

Organizational Systems and Support

  • Build and improve tools and processes that help staff understand their grant budgets and funding.
  • Play a key role in shaping how the organization manages and plans around grant funding.
