Position Summary
The Residential North Design Coordinator role focuses on the coordination with internal (e.g., CPS Energy Gas, Distribution Engineering) and external (e.g., customer, general contractor, electrician, plumber) customer and design of overhead, underground electrical, and gas installations, extensions and/or system improvements. The position requires effective application of specialized knowledge to ensure that new construction requests comply with safety and regulatory requirements, while ensuring projects are designed in accordance with CPS Energy (CPSE) standards for load capacity. The Design Coordinator represents CPSE during customer site visits, providing design insight and educating customers concerning the steps required to move the project forward. The Design Coordinator applies knowledge of project interdependencies to ensure that key tasks are initiated, scheduled, and completed on the appropriate timetable, to achieve project goals. The position requires accurate application of mathematic principles for accurate invoicing, organizational systems for updating project status and attaching artifacts such as maps, permits and site images. Specific work varies by area.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Conducts field inspections, to prepare project sites for construction, including staking pole locations and identifying buried utilities.
- Completes job sketches and mock-ups for service and meter sets in compliance with CPS Energy standards for map notations and design of electric and gas delivery systems.
- Coordinates with internal construction centers, external agencies, and customers to design the installation of overhead line extensions, underground electric line extensions, upgrades, remodels, and gas main extensions for residential service, residential developments, commercial services, and large commercial services to include civic improvement projects in the downtown network system.
- Proactively manages all inbound work volumes, without supervision, to accurately estimate time and resources, prioritize customer needs in balance with business standards to meet anticipate project milestones for timely release to construction.
- Applies knowledge of CPS Energy infrastructure and design expertise to efficiently assess potential project impediments, makes decisions and effectively expresses clear and concise details and options that address customer needs in balance with CPSE requirements.
- Remediates project site encroachments to prepare job for construction by effectively persuading customers concerning the activities required to achieve project goals, while managing key site preparation tasks internally to align with anticipated construction release.
- Quickly and accurately assess potential project impediments, applying specialized knowledge of CPSE infrastructure, design expertise, and project specific expectations to offer design solutions that maintain delivery timelines and meet regulatory requirements.
- Creates accurate Contributions in Aid of Construction (CIAC) invoicing for customer projects and communicates the same to the customer/customer representative, providing alternative solutions when necessary and based on customer response to project costs.
- Applies effective interpersonal skills and empathy to effectively support customers through difficult decisions, persuading customers of critical activities required to achieve project goals while managing site preparation tasks necessary to meet anticipate construction release.
- Maintains technical and professional skills necessary to navigate CPSE and City data resources to evaluate project requirements and details against CPS Energy standards to maintain operational excellence through effectively using tools and technology for design work products.
- Promotes CPS Energy goals for transparency and excellence by maintaining constant awareness of project statuses, through proactive assessment and remediation of delays, providing up-to-date job status details in the appropriate business applications and/or engaging Expeditor Led to mitigate delay.
- Respects and follows safety policies and regulations; scans work environment (office/field) for items/issues that may pose a safety risk.
- Encourages others to utilize safe and healthy work practices.
- Performs other project and activities as assigned.
Minimum Skills

Preferred Qualifications
Associate degree with a concentration in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical or related field from an accredited university; In lieu of a degree, Experience in residential/commercial utility-scale distribution planning or residential/commercial utility construction CAD/GIS or other related technical experience will be considered.
Depending on business area, preferred knowledge needed in items such as:
- Overhead and underground electric distribution design and construction standards
- Designer/Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Work Management Information System (WMIS), and Customer Information System (SAP)
- Single-phase/three-phase overhead and underground electric distribution design and construction standards
- Downtown Network design and construction standards
- Gas design and construction standards
- Electric Service Standards
- Electric and Gas Line Extension Policies
- Relative experience in supporting utility construction & maintenance.

Minimum Education
High School or GED equivalent with design experience.
Working Environment
Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equip, phone, multi-functioning printer & calculator. Ability to travel to & from meetings, training sessions or other busi-related events.
Physical Demands
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
