Join the power movement as a Director of Radiation Protection

The Director of Radiation Protection, who also serves as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), is a key member of the Environmental Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS) leadership team. This individual is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, and long-term success of CFS's comprehensive Radiation Protection program. They will champion a strong safety culture throughout the organization, and work with leaders across EHSS and all departments to develop and implement a holistic and proactive approach to safety.

What you'll do

  • Radiation Protection Leadership: Serve as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for the CFS Broad Scope License and provide leadership in all areas radiation is used
  • Develop Radiation Protection Program: Responsible for the development of CFS Radiation Protection Program areas in accordance with state and federal radiation regulations, with oversight from the Radiation Safety Committee.
  • Lead and manage Radiation Protection Team: Responsible for the recruitment, selection, management, development and assessment of Radiation Protection staff.
  • Manage and Assess the Radiation Protection Program: Responsible for the technical adequacy of all program operations. Ensures the program is performed in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, Licensing Commitments, and Regulatory Requirements. Performs or oversees annual program assessments.
  • Hazard Risk Investigation and Response: Conduct incident and exposure investigations, and develop corrective actions plans. Ensure that appropriate follow-up is completed, recorded, and reported to the Radiation Safety Committee and/or regulatory authorities.
  • Monitor and Report on Radiation Protection Program Operations: Responsible for preparing reports and maintaining records of program operations in a form suitable for inspection by regulatory agencies.
  • Liaise with Regulatory Agencies and Professional Societies: Participate in the work of professional societies and governmental agencies in standards setting, education and regulatory development related to Radiation Protection. Stay apprised of proposed and upcoming regulatory changes and their potential impact on fusion and the CFS License. Responsible for all radiological correspondence with state and federal agencies including.
  • Community Outreach: Support outreach efforts by representing CFS at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces.
  • Formulate Direction and Strategy: Plan and implement short and long-term strategy and direction for the Radiation Protection Program consistent with overall EHSS mission and strategic goals.
  • Financial Budgeting and Control: Prepare and track budget and staffing levels for program operations.
  • Maintain Knowledge of the whole EHSS Program: Understand the structure and function of all areas of EHSS. Maintain familiarity with, lead, and participate in emergency cross training procedures.
  • Support Cross-functional Partnerships: Lead or support cross-functional teams, special projects, and performs other duties as assigned

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in physical science, engineering, or biological science.
  • 10+ years management experience, 15+ years of professional experience in health physics including at least 5+ years in applied health physics with responsibility for a major program in radiological health
  • Experience working under and applying radiation regulations, specifically 105 CMR 120/10 CFR 30 (or equivalent)
  • Experience applying a variety of radiation monitoring techniques to different situations
  • Experience writing procedures, work plans, or technical documents

Bonus points for

  • Experience with gram quantities of tritium (either use or oversight)
  • Experience working under a broad scope license
  • Experience with radiation facility lifecycle - design, licensing, operation, and decommissioning.
  • CHP (Certified Health Physicist)
  • Knowledge of radiation control, radiological health, environmental laws and regulations, and radiation safety practices and techniques
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community as well as foster a cooperative work environment.

$170,000 - $250,000 a year

Salary range for this full-time position + equity + benefits. The actual salary will depend on level, location, qualifications, and experience. The range displayed on each job posting reflects new hire salaries for the position across all US locations.
