Job Description

SP Energy Networks (SPEN) plays a vital role in ensuring we keep up with the evolving way our customers and communities generate, consume, and interact with energy through the provision of services that are crucial to the delivery of the Government's ambitious Net Zero and Low Carbon targets.

As our Senior Energy System Specialist, you will join our diverse and high performing Flexibility team which is a core part of the Distribution System Operation function.

Flexibility is about changing how our customers use energy, turning up or down at the right times to help manage an increasingly dynamic network. To incentivise this, we operate Flexibility Service Markets, engaging with a broad range of market participants from suppliers and aggregators acting on behalf of domestic customers through to Industrial & Commercial Customers and large generators.

It will be your responsibility to grow participation in SPEN Flexibility markets. Flexibility will help unlock cleaner generation, faster electrification and consumer‑driven energy all whilst helping reduce customer bills.

To do this we procure Flexibility Services to support:

  • Network Investment - Deferring the need for network investment or supporting the deliverability of investment to ensure that customers can connect to our network and reduce overall costs for consumers
  • Network Operability - Customers providing support during planned or unplanned outages driven by planned outages or severe weather events

Responsibilities

Business Development & Market Engagement

Drive the growth of SP Energy Networks flexibility market by supporting both existing and new Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs) throughout their entire journey, from initial exploration and onboarding through to scheduling and dispatch. This involves engaging with a diverse customer base ranging from innovative start-ups to large multinational organisations with over 10,000 employees. The role also supports the design and delivery of flexibility tenders across monthly, day-ahead and bilateral markets, while contributing to SP Energy Networks wider Market Engagement Strategy through direct provider engagement, webinars, industry events and promotional activities. A key objective is to increase provider participation, expand flexible capacity in emerging network areas and encourage involvement from underrepresented FSP groups, while acting as an ambassador for SP Energy Networks and the DSO Flexibility team across the energy sector.

Product Development

Support the development and enhancement of flexibility products that deliver value to both the distribution network and market participants. By combining stakeholder engagement, market intelligence and operational insights, the role identifies opportunities to create new flexibility solutions and improve existing services. Working closely with Flexibility Service Providers helps drive continuous improvements to market processes, procurement tools and customer experience, while the development of real-time and short-term modelling capabilities supports more effective flexibility procurement. Regular feedback mechanisms are also established and maintained to ensure product evolution is informed by both internal stakeholders and external market participants.

Commercial Analysis & Market Intelligence

Provide commercial insight and market intelligence to support strategic decision-making and the continued growth of flexibility markets. This includes developing and publishing market information through key documents such as the Participation Guidance and Market Prospectus, enabling providers to better understand current opportunities and future network requirements. The role also involves benchmarking SP Energy Networks flexibility products and services against competing markets and industry best practice, while using real-time and short-term modelling to improve forecasting and procurement decisions. By translating complex market data into meaningful insights, the role helps shape both commercial strategy and market development.

Governance & Regulatory Obligations

Ensure flexibility markets operate effectively, transparently and in line with regulatory requirements through close collaboration with the Market Facilitator and key industry stakeholders. The role supports the implementation and ongoing adherence to market rules, contributes to the design and delivery of KPI frameworks, and oversees reporting requirements associated with Elexon's role as Market Facilitator. It also plays an active role in shaping the future regulatory landscape by participating in industry working groups with organisations including Elexon, NESO and DESNZ, helping to streamline processes, influence policy development and ensure SPEN's flexibility products remain aligned with the evolving national flexibility market across Great Britain.

What you'll bring

You will be an exceptional communicator with the ability to translate complex technical and commercial concepts into clear, engaging messages for a broad range of audiences. You will possess strong stakeholder management skills, demonstrating the ability to build credibility, influence decision-making, and develop meaningful relationships across industry, regulatory and commercial environments.

You should have experience of, or exposure to, the energy sector, particularly within energy supply, aggregation, energy management, trading, flexibility services, or other market-facing roles. A strong commercial mindset is essential, with knowledge of ancillary services, balancing mechanisms and wider energy markets considered highly advantageous.

The role requires proven experience in contract management and administration, with the ability to oversee agreements throughout their full lifecycle, from negotiation and implementation through to delivery, governance and financial management. Experience working within a regulated environment, including engagement with industry stakeholders, regulators such as Ofgem, or equivalent bodies, would be highly beneficial.

You should be comfortable operating in a fast-paced and evolving environment, with a demonstrated ability to lead and manage change while fostering a positive, collaborative and engaged culture. Strong emotional intelligence, sound judgement and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder landscapes are key to success in the role.

In addition, you must be highly organised and capable of managing multiple priorities simultaneously, balancing a diverse and demanding workload while maintaining a high standard of delivery and achieving business objectives.
