Job Description

Join SP Energy Networks as a Senior Systems Engineer within our Advanced Energy Management Systems (AEMS) team, where you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Scotland's electrical grid. The AEMS team drives the strategic development of Smart Grid applications and systems that enhance electrical network capabilities through sophisticated control systems. As we evolve towards Distribution System Operator (DSO) and Transmission System Operator (TSO) Smart Grid Applications, you'll define technical solutions and standards for transformative projects including Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS), REPOWER, and overarching Orchestration systems. This is your opportunity to be at the forefront of renewable energy integration and help deliver Scotland's Net Zero goals by 2044.

What you'll be doing

  • As a Senior Systems Engineer, you'll serve as the technical authority for one or more AEMS projects, defining technical standards and validating solutions deployed by our delivery team. You'll produce comprehensive solution designs that balance technical excellence with operational requirements.
  • Your role involves working closely across the wider business, partnering with teams including Network Planning & Regulation, SPT, SPD, and SPM to ensure solutions meet both technical and operational needs. You'll engage with our Cybersecurity team to maintain compliance with security architecture standards, and work alongside the Smart Grid Operations team covering Telecoms, Infrastructure, and Real Time Systems to deliver fully operational designs that meet organizational standards.
  • You'll assist with systems design activities, ensuring compliance with Group standards while defining streamlined processes for efficient project delivery. Your expertise will inform business case development, outlining costs, benefits, and delivery approaches for system development or refresh initiatives. Throughout project delivery, you'll provide technical assistance to ensure successful completion with clear stakeholder communication.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with suppliers is key, as you'll oversee service delivery to ensure on-time, on-budget performance. You'll contribute expert technical input to architectural planning, ensuring plans and budgets reflect the investment required to achieve our desired state. Your role includes evaluating and recommending new system solutions and technologies, planning for emerging customer needs and new infrastructure from an electrical applications perspective.

What you'll bring

  • You'll have a degree in electrical, electronic, or telecommunication engineering, or relevant equivalent experience. Alternatively, an HND/HNC qualification with at least five years of post-training experience in an engineering or project management role within a utility business is required.
  • Your technical expertise includes in-depth experience with Smart Grid applications or real-time control system development. You'll bring working knowledge of Smart Grid Electrical Control Systems and ADMS (Advanced Distribution Management System) or SCADA technologies, or Power Systems Engineering. A proven track record of design and delivery that balances technical and commercial considerations is essential.
  • You're numerically articulate with exceptional attention to detail, capable of devising solutions to complex technical problems. Your communication skills enable you to explain sophisticated technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, whether verbally or in writing. You excel at consulting with colleagues across the business, resolving differences, and presenting unified perspectives.
  • You work effectively with external vendors, customers, and stakeholders. You're skilled at prioritizing work effectively and managing technical, financial, and project delivery risks. Experience gained through operational, technical, and commercial engineering roles is valuable.
  • Project management skills are desirable, as is experience managing teams. You'll need to be comfortable reviewing and evaluating proposals from third parties, influencing stakeholders at business and technical levels, and working with colleagues across Iberdrola globally. A valid driving licence is essential, as the role requires travel to fulfill duties and obligations.

What's in it for you

As well as an attractive salary which is reviewed annually, you can also enjoy a number of other benefits. With our pension scheme, we'll double match your contribution up to a company contribution of 10%.
