About the Role

TransAlta's Hydro Operations team plays a critical role in delivering clean, reliable energy across Canada. As a Hydro Safety Advisor, you will be at the forefront of safety leadership for our hydroelectric facilities, ensuring our people, contractors, and communities are protected while we harness the power of water. This position is dedicated to supporting the unique operational, regulatory, and environmental challenges of hydro generation, driving continuous improvement in safety culture and performance. This full-time, office-based, safety sensitive position has the flexibility to be based out of our Spray Plant in Canmore, AB, or our Seebe Plant in the Bow Valley Region of Alberta. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.

A Day in the Life

  • Actively contribute as a member of the hydro leadership team, collaborating on strategic initiatives, sharing safety insights, and supporting continuous improvement across hydro operations.
  • Review safety reports, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), confined space permits, fall protection plans, and Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA) audits/inspections; ensure quality control and follow up on outstanding items.
  • Arrange and/or deliver safety-related training (e.g., confined space, fall protection, first aid, bear awareness, contractor authorization to perform work training etc.).
  • Lead and coach incident investigations; prepare and share safety alerts, lessons learned, and incident presentations.
  • Manage contractors: review, inspect, maintain training records, and ensure accurate reporting of hours for metrics calculations.
  • Develop and review tailboard materials, safety meeting topics, and project safety management plans.
  • Attend and contribute to safety group meetings, team check-ins, and corporate audits.
  • Conduct site visits, inspections, capital project audits, Lock-Out-Tag-Out audits, work permit audits, and ergonomic assessments.
  • Prepare, review, and distribute reports (KPI's, safety reports, FLHA, drill schedules, Joint Workplace Safety Committee (JWSC) minutes).
  • Maintain and update safety procedures, Field Emergency Response Guide documentation, safety posters, and rescue gear; track legislative changes for BC, AB, and ON.
  • Ensure design, procurement, and construction activities are carried out in accordance with provincial and federal OHS legislation and international standards.
  • Continuously improve systems, processes, procedures and training to support the prevention of serious injuries and imbed human and organizational principles.
  • Support operational teams with safety pre-planning, technical advice, and daily calls.
  • Coordinate occupational exposure sampling, lead/asbestos testing, noise mapping, audio and respiratory fit testing, and Alcohol & Drug testing.
  • Participate in vendor reviews, ISNetworld reviews, and Construction Owners Association of Alberta (COAA) safety committee activities.
  • Monitor and update processes to corporate safety initiatives (e.g., FLHA development, life-saving rules rollout).
  • Own and maintain drill schedules and Field Emergency Response Guide (FERG) documentation; ensure annual updates and distribution.
  • Prepare and send summaries and reports to management and teams, highlighting improvements and compliance.

About You

  • Certificate (or equivalent) in Occupational Health and Safety
  • 5+ years applied field experience in a safety related position is desired,
  • Designation as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or equivalent designation would be an asset,
  • The successful candidate will have experience in an industrial/operational environment with the implementation and/or management of H&S programs/systems,
  • Experience in power plant or process plant operations, maintenance, engineering and project management would be an asset,
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are important as this position involves considerable interaction with management, external regulators and plant personnel.

Other Requirements

  • The successful candidate must be available to work on-site at our hydro operations office and facilities, primarily working from the Ghost/Seebe or Spray sites.
  • Travel to various hydroelectric sites and locations is required to support operational needs, conduct inspections, deliver training, and participate in safety initiatives and meetings across the region. This includes quarterly travel to our Brazeau and Bighorn hydro plants on the North Saskatchewan River System (NSR) in Alberta, and annual travel to our small hydro facilities located in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.
  • Must be capable of working outdoors in environments where conditions can change rapidly. This includes having the physical ability to navigate varied terrain and weather, and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) suited to those conditions.
