Job Description

The Technical Project Manager is focused on the development of engineering solutions and strategies for the project opportunities, which include heat networks, data centre and long duration storage.

Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Technical Project Manager will support the development and strategy of the engineering required for the business opportunities. This includes the creation of engineering policies and standards, development of engineering design frameworks and standardised design solutions. They should draw on their commercial and technical knowledge to develop technical solutions and provide accurate capital expenditure forecasts to support the financial models and investment decisions

What you'll be doing

  • Support the development of the pipeline of projects to meet/exceed the growth plan and the development of commercial and technical solutions to support these business opportunities.
  • Development of the appropriate procurement strategy in conjunction with Technical Manager and procurement
  • Assist in the development of appropriate technical & commercial strategies alongside the Technical Manager.
  • Provide input to all technical & commercial agreements and contracts to ensure risks are mitigated.
  • Ensure all key decisions are supported by sufficient technical & commercial due diligence and investigation.
  • Manage the production of design improvement and build specifications.
  • Manage the tendering of engineering design contracts and the technical assessment.
  • Liaise and coordinate with external suppliers and contractors to ensure delivery specifications are met & post contract quality & commercial reviews are delivered.
  • Manage interfaces between the main contractors and construction partners.
  • Manage contract claims/variations & ensure the Technical Manager is informed at all stages.
  • Manage technical advisors/consultants as appropriate
  • Review/monitor engineering contracts against programme and ensure key project milestones are achieved. Create project plans using suitable digital tools & deliver diligent monthly reports to Technical Manager.
  • Ensure contract budgets are maintained and reported to Technical Manager.
  • Manage the process of regular meetings, communications and reports to the Head of hydrogen projects, which provide accurate and timely information to support their understanding of strategic risks, issues, opportunities, impacts and progress.
  • Manage and actively identify all engineering risks, issues and impacts on the projects, specifically the adequate application of and adherence to both statutory and corporate health, safety and environmental requirements.
  • Participate in lessons learnt sessions to continually improve business practices and processes.
  • Conduct progress, co-ordination and interface meetings with the team, client and contractors

What you'll bring

  • Relevant degree and/or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of specification, design, maintenance, construction and commissioning of plant, apparatus, control & protection equipment.
  • Knowledge of various industry contract terms and conditions, preference in energy sector projects and district heating (FIDIC, NEC, JCT).
  • Experience in Project Management and Project Engineering
  • Experience and understanding of commercial contracts and negotiations.
  • Experience and detailed understanding of technical due diligence
  • Ability to translate technical detail into commercial impact
  • Health & Safety management skills
  • Tenacity, persistence and determination to succeed
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, operating confidently at management level
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills
  • Experience of writing technical specifications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with management and with contractors
  • Ability to identify and match resources and skills to appropriate project roles
  • Ability to manage people effectively to deliver required outputs in a timely manner
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Provide innovation and creative thinking

Minimum Criteria

  • Relevant degree and/or equivalent experience
  • Negotiation skills
  • A proven track record in people management, change management, quality and risk management
  • Well-developed influencing and negotiation skills at a senior level
  • Ability to influence across competitors and other stakeholders
