As our Compliance and Assurance Manager for retail energy supply, you will provide senior oversight, practical guidance, and constructive challenge to ensure Good Energy meets its industry obligations with confidence. You'll own the compliance approach for key supply processes, support effective regulatory change management, oversee robust assurance frameworks, and ensure high-quality regulatory reporting. Reporting to the Head of Information Governance, Risk & Compliance, this role combines strategic oversight with leadership across retail energy supply giving you a pivotal platform to drive operational resilience and continuous improvement across the retail business.
Responsibilities
- Regulatory leadership & subject matter expertise: Act as the senior compliance and assurance lead for Retail Energy Supply, providing subject matter expertise on energy supplier obligations across applicable industry codes, including the Standard Licence Conditions, Retail Energy Code, Smart Energy Code, and other relevant frameworks.
- Team leadership & management: Provide line management, direction, and professional development support to direct reports, fostering a high-performing, collaborative, and risk-aware compliance culture.
- Regulatory reporting & submission management: Lead the successful completion of regulatory reporting submissions for Retail Energy Supply, managing senior stakeholders and ensuring all responses are accurate, cohesive, and supported by robust evidence.
- Incident management & risk escalation: Oversee the management of data breaches, compliance incidents, and regulatory risks arising across Retail Energy Supply, ensuring timely escalation, reporting, and completion of corrective actions.
- Regulatory change management: Work alongside the Regulatory Affairs team to assess upcoming regulatory change, determine the operational impact across Retail Energy Supply, and ensure senior leaders are informed, prepared, and accountable for delivery.
- High-risk process assurance: Own and mature assurance frameworks for high-risk Retail Energy Supply processes, including involuntary PPM, debt, billing, customer vulnerability, complaints, and other regulated customer journeys.
- Quality assurance & insight sharing: Oversee quality assurance activity across relevant Retail Energy Supply teams to ensure insight is captured, shared, and used to drive continuous improvement and ongoing regulatory compliance.
- Policy, process & control development: Lead the development, review, and maintenance of policies, processes, risk controls, and training materials required to ensure sustained compliance across Retail Energy Supply.
- Control testing & audit delivery: Own the planning and delivery of control testing across Retail Energy Supply, ensuring key controls operate effectively, findings are tracked through to closure, and internal/external audit observations are managed to satisfactory resolution.
What you'll need to succeed
As a senior subject matter expert across energy industry regulation, you'll be proactive, pragmatic, and confident in leading compliance and assurance activity across retail energy supply. You'll bring strong communication and stakeholder management skills, enabling you to provide clear guidance, constructive challenge, and proportionate risk-based advice to teams from a variety of disciplines. Motivated, organized, and confident in line management, you'll be comfortable owning a broad workplan, setting clear priorities, and collaborating closely with senior leadership to manage regulatory risk effectively.
Essentials
- Energy industry regulatory knowledge: Strong knowledge of supply licence conditions, relevant law, and industry code agreements governing the supply of energy, with a proven track record of applying these requirements across retail energy operations.
- Industry experience: Previous experience working within the energy industry, with prior experience communicating externally with regulators (such as Ofgem).
- Assurance & risk frameworks: Experience leading assurance activity within a Three Lines of Defence model and providing senior-level insight on risk management effectiveness.
- Stakeholder management & chairing: Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills, with the ability to engage, challenge, and secure action from colleagues and senior leaders, as well as lead and chair cross-functional meetings.
- Audit & regulatory change delivery: Proven ability to manage complex regulatory change, project manage assurance programmes, and engage with internal and external auditors to drive agreed actions through to closure.
- Policy & workflow documentation: Experience in policy writing and implementation, alongside the ability to interpret technical concepts and workflows and distil them into clear, operational working documents.
- Leadership & third-party management: Line management experience or readiness to manage direct reports, coupled with the ability to manage third parties and associated contracts effectively.
- Attention to detail: Demonstrable attention to detail alongside exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable
- Specific Regulatory & Code Focus: Practical experience engaging with industry parties such as the Retail Energy Code (REC), Smart Energy Code (SEC), across schemes including Warm Home Discount (WHD) and Feed In Tariff (FIT) as well as compliance initiatives such as involuntary prepayment meters.
Hybrid working explained: When and where you'll be in the office
Our office is based in Chippenham, Wiltshire. For this role, we're looking for candidates who can come in to our Chippenham office once a month or once a quarter, based on location.
