Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Process Design Engineer to contribute to the design of the Kairos Power advanced nuclear power plant and related prototypes and test systems.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Update and maintain Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) under supervision from Process Lead or other Responsible Engineers for a non-nuclear test plant leading to an advanced nuclear power plant
  • Update and maintain process data in an engineering database to ensure accuracy and consistency across engineering deliverable lists (valve list, line list, etc.)
  • Produce engineering calculations and reports for design of process equipment, pressure drop/hydraulics, and selection of instruments under supervision
  • Collaborate with other process engineers and engineering disciplines, such as mechanical, instrumentation and controls to ensure accurate transfer of process design within project objectives
  • Provide field support through fabrication, erection, commissioning, and operations

Qualification

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline
  • 7+ years of relevant industry experience in molten salt, refining, chemical, or power generation process design engineering (or equivalent industry)
  • Working Knowledge of AutoCAD or smart P&ID software preferred
  • Basic knowledge in use of process simulation and/or hydraulic simulation software (HTRI, AVEVA, Aspen Plus, Pro/II, Hysys, AFT Fathom/Arrow, SiNet, Apros, etc.)
  • Experienced with process design of equipment and instrumentation (pressure vessels, heat exchangers, fixed catalyst beds, compressors, control valves, relief valves, etc.)
  • Familiar with process safety reviews such as HAZOP/PHA/LOPA/FMEA or equivalent
  • Experience in supporting a new product development cycle from concept to commissioning
  • Experience with designing systems for hazardous chemicals, molten salts, liquid metals, high-temperature petrochemical processes, etc. is desired
  • Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills

  • Color identification: detecting, distinguishing, recognizing and identifying colors
  • Wearing proper PPE, to include face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes

Travel

  • Some travel may be required (up to 20%)

Additional Requirements

  • Requires schedule flexibility
  • Occasionally requires non-standard work-week hours
  • Occasionally requires extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines

The salary range for this position is $116,400 to $137,000 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California.
