About the Role
We're looking for a Commercial Specialist - Transmission- who will be accountable to lead TransAlta's regulated transmission business. Reporting to the Commercial Manager this role's primary responsibility is to coordinate and ensure the accuracy of TransAlta's General Tariff Filing Application (GTA) to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and to provide oversight of AltaLink's operation and maintenance of TransAlta's transmission lines on First Nation lands across Alberta. This work includes overseeing and approving AltaLink's O&M and capital plans for TransAlta's assets, facilitating access for AltaLink to complete those activities, and building and maintaining relationships with First Nations, primarily through their land's offices. This is a great opportunity for someone who likes the concept of running their own business within the framework of a broader organization.
This position is based out of our Downtown Calgary Head Office, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.
A Day in the Life
As a Commercial Specialist - Transmission, you'll play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of TransAlta's transmission assets while fostering strong relationships with First Nations communities. Your day will include:

Project Oversight & Maintenance Planning
- Collaborate with AltaLink to finalize and approve annual and long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) and capital upgrade plans.
- Monitor project progress, budgets, and performance standards.
- In conjunction with AltaLink, create materials that support operations and project related discussions with First Nations.

Regulatory & Compliance
- In conjunction with TransAlta's regulatory legal team, prepare, submit and respond to information requests for TransAlta's GTA filing.
- Develop business cases and support materials for prudence reviews.
- Work with AltaLink to advance transmission-related files that have both regulatory and compliance implications.

First Nations Engagement
- Provide operations and project-level information to TransAlta's External Affairs team who are the primary liaison between AltaLink and First Nation representatives.
- Communicate maintenance and capital work plans to communities and secure access to reserve lands.
- Maintain strong relationships with 13 First Nations, respecting cultural traditions and organizational structures.
- Prepare materials that facilitate discussions with Land teams and Chief & Council for project approvals.
- Coordinate with and involve TransAlta's indigenous relations team to support or lead certain activities.

Administration & Reporting
- Obtaining internal approvals for expenditure, managing purchase orders and invoicing, and reviewing and informing financial reporting.
- In conjunction with TransAlta's indigenous relations team, prepare materials and execute annual 1:1 in-person meetings with each First Nation.
- Ensure all discussions and outcomes are clearly documented for purposes of filing TransAlta's GTA and supporting AltaLink's filing of facility applications and other regulatory filings.
- Maintain accurate records of and from time to time update TransAlta's permits with First Nations.
- Coordinate tax and structure payments with Finance, Indigenous Services Canada, and First Nations.
About You
- Ability to lead and coordinate TransAlta's GTA filing and ensure accurate representation of operational activities in a regulatory context.
- Experience in oversight of transmission operations, maintenance planning, budgeting and permitting.
- Ability to manage project interfaces with landowners and oversee contractor performance of project activities.
- Desire to work with First Nations communities, respecting cultural traditions and governance structures.
- Understanding of or at a minimum willingness to learn the permitting structures that govern access to First Nation Lands.
- Strong commercial acumen to balance risk and reward trade-offs across various transmission-related commercial matters.
- Excellent customer relations and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Strong record-keeping skills to ensure activities are tracked in a manner to support regulatory filings and commercial matters.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills to facilitate approvals and agreements.
- Solid understanding of financial processes, including tariff schedules, purchase order reconciliation, billing, and invoicing.
- Ability to travel (10-15 trips annually), some areas are remote, but all are within 4 hours driving distance from Calgary, AB.
