What you will do

Role Overview

The HV Technician III will provide electrical, high-voltage (HV), and substation emergency response to renewable generating facilities across the Company with a primary focus in an assigned zone. Candidate will lead maintenance and repair of HV assets in conjunction with other members of the HV Team. Candidate will also work independently under the general direction of the HV Operations Manager.

Main responsibilities

  • Monitor and provide electrical, HV, and substation support to renewable generating facilities in an assigned zone
  • Provide 24/7 on-call support
  • Provide support for electrical design, engineering, testing, and construction as requested
  • Perform tests and repairs for switching and construction activities as requested
  • Support and coordinate commissioning, start-up, and initial operating activities
  • Manages the HV spare parts inventory of the renewable generating facilities in the zone they are responsible for
  • Safely perform switching and grounding of step-up transformers, feeder breakers, gang-operated switches, and other related components
  • Operate equipment such as bucket/line trucks, forklifts, and aerial lifts
  • Performs equipment inspections and testing to include documentation review and storage in the respective repository to ensure compliance with the applicable NERC standards and established company policies and procedures
  • Lead substation maintenance via Orders To Operate (OTOs), SAP work orders, outage planning, and other related activities
  • Reports problems and updates activities in the SAP CMMS as needed
  • Maintains inventory, inspection, and calibration of all tooling and equipment as required
  • Develops and implements site betterment projects, including preparation of scope documents, exhibits, budgets, schedules, and Requests for Proposals (RFPs)
  • Supports and coordinate electrical equipment maintenance at company facilities with LOTO and outage planning
  • Perform substation and transmission maintenance in accordance with NERC compliance requirements and established company policies and procedures
  • Work closely with site Operations Managers of the assigned region to ensure day-to-day reliability and high Technical Energy Availability based on plants' economics
  • Serve as the first responder for emergency and routine repairs on HV equipment including transmission lines, HV cable terminations, and splices
  • Provide remote HV support to the HV Operations Manager for complex troubleshooting, component testing, and proof checking
  • Ensures adherence to all pertinent OSHA safety requirements and established company policies and procedures
  • Provide detailed written reports including root cause analyses to Operations and HV Management
  • Trains team members and other EDPR NA field personnel to perform IR thermography, electrical equipment maintenance, and prepare them to operate collection system and substation equipment
  • Operate and maintain company vehicles in ready-to-respond condition
  • Additional duties as required

What are we looking for

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree in electrical engineering technology or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • 5+ years of relevant technical experience; experience in power generation or distribution is preferred
  • Electrical trade certifications (e.g., four-year line or substation apprenticeship) or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Advanced knowledge of medium- and high-voltage substation electrical equipment, collection systems, and transmission lines maintenance and operations
  • Experience with relay and protection fundamentals
  • Experience with LOTO and OTO procedures
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of a valid driver's license
  • Experience with establishing HV field service preferred
  • Familiarity with the operation of capacitor banks, transformer load tap changers, and motor operated air disconnects
  • Understanding of Microsoft products and/or complementing products (Preferred)
  • Competency in Analytical Problem Solving, Strong Communication, Customer/Partner Relationships, and Technology Expertise (Preferred)

  • Ability to read and understand plans, specifications, drawings, and documents relating to engineering and construction, including one-line, three-line, and wiring diagrams
  • Ability to work with other crews performing high line maintenance and repair
  • Ability and willingness to respond to site emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as needed

Physical demands & working conditions

  • Sitting/Standing/Flexibility: Ability to frequently perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching approximately 75% of the time while on wind farm sites; ability to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environment
  • Walking: Ability to walk .25 to .5 miles per day, including across unpaved and rough surfaces when on wind farm sites
  • Speech/Reading: Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form
  • Lifting: Ability to frequently lift items weighing up to 60 pounds and to occasionally lift items weighing between 60 and 100 pounds
  • Climbing: Ability to climb turbine towers in excess of 100 meters in height to access the work area Weight must be between 125 lbs. and 275 lbs., excluding equipment/gear worn when performing job-related tasks, to be in accordance with the ANSI Fall Protection Standards.
  • Vision/Hearing: Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form
