Electrical Engineering jobs in renewable energy

Electrical Engineering Jobs in Renewable Energy

Electrical engineering in renewable energy is the design and specification of the electrical systems that carry power from a turbine, module, or battery to the grid: cabling, transformers, switchgear, protection, earthing, and the connection itself. It is the discipline most directly exposed to the current build-out. The power sector accounted for three-quarters of recent energy job growth, according to the IEA, which also estimates that the number of new qualified entrants to the energy sector would need to rise by 40% to keep pace.

What the work involves

Most electrical engineers in renewables work somewhere along one chain. At the front, they size array and collector cabling, run load flow and short-circuit studies, and prove to the grid operator that a plant meets the grid code. In the middle, they specify transformers, switchgear, and protection settings for the site substation. At the back, they write commissioning procedures and sign off the energisation. The detail differs by technology: a solar plant is an exercise in DC design and inverter behaviour, a wind farm in medium-voltage collection systems and long cable runs, a battery site in fault levels and fire separation.

The title covers a wide spread of roles, and the postings under this tag show it. Electrical engineers and senior electrical engineers sit next to journeymen electricians, service technicians, and German Elektroniker für Windenergieanlagen. The field trades belong more properly to Electrical Installation, but the overlap is real: many engineers start as technicians, and the best design engineers have spent time on site.

Who hires

Turbine makers and service companies post the largest volumes. ENERCON, Vestas, and Nordex hire for electrical design and for field service, and Deutsche Windtechnik recruits service electricians across Germany, which is why Berlin and Hamburg top the locations for this category. Developers such as EDP Renewables and Iberdrola need engineers who can take a plant from grid application to commissioning. Network companies form the third group: Dutch distribution operator Enexis and Australia's Transgrid both hire steadily to expand networks that renewables have outgrown.

Grids set the pace

The network side is where the demand is heading. The EU's Grids Action Plan put the investment needed in European electricity grids by 2030 at €584 billion, and Bruegel's review of the estimates puts annual needs to 2030 at €65 billion to €100 billion. Every one of those euros passes through studies, designs, and protection schemes drawn up by electrical engineers, and grid operators, consultancies, and contractors are competing for the same people.

The scarcest profile is the engineer who can run the studies. Power Systems Engineering roles, which cover grid code compliance, harmonics, and stability studies with tools such as PSS/E, PowerFactory, or ETAP, sit at the top of that demand, with Substation Engineering close behind. An electrical engineer who has designed a plant and then taken it through a grid operator's compliance testing holds the most transferable experience in the discipline, because every developer, utility, and turbine maker needs exactly that sequence repeated.
