Join the power movement as Director of Electrical Engineering
CFS is designing SPARC, a tokamak able to achieve net energy plasmas. SPARC includes HTS and copper magnets, thermal shields, vessels and plasma facing components, all subject to large operational loads (thermal, electromagnetic, etc) and competing for space. As the Director of Electrical Engineering, you will manage the engineering staff responsible for designing and delivering a wide range of electrical and power electronics systems for SPARC and future power plants.
What you'll do
- Lead the CFS Electrical Engineering team
- Hire and develop outstanding electrical (power electronics & power systems focused) engineers
- Work cross functionally with project leaders to understand their system needs
- Plan, organize and manage the work of the team to meet organizational targets
- Create key performance metrics, and delivery goals for the team
- Establish best practices, workflows and standards for unique domains within electrical engineering (electrical safety, facility power, power electronics conversion systems, energy storage, power distribution, power generation, etc.)
- Set clear design standards and ensure they are aligned with project needs
- Lead system test validation strategy including developing test protocols and engaging with internal and external testing laboratories as required to meet UL, IEC, CSA product safety and compliance standards
- Ensure that released electrical bills of materials, schematics and drawings are correct and of high quality
- Drive team to meet the required scope to meet set schedule within the budget targets
- Provide guidance and direction to the team to ensure operational and technical excellence
- Work with the cross functional engineering team leaders to resolve technical issues
- Drive a culture of ownership and accountability within the technical team
What we're looking for
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (or similar electrical technology discipline)
- 15+ years of experience in the engineering of complex high-power electronics and electrical systems
- Extensive experience with design and development of power electronics and electrical systems (AC & DC power supplies, medium / high (>1000V up to 35kV) high voltage variable frequency drive systems, motors etc.) from concept to production
- Extensive technical knowledge of electrical systems applications for large scale complex applications in utility, oil & gas, renewable energy industries
- Experience with facility & utility power systems, power conversion and energy storage, and power generation (motors, generators, variable frequency drives) driving and driven equipment
- 5+ years of supervisory experience with at least 10 individuals at junior, senior & principal levels
- Ability to develop and manage design procedures, specifications, test plans and validation procedures for electrical systems
- Experience with design and development of systems that meet electrical safety and product compliance standards (UL, NEC, IEC, CSA etc.)
- Ability to clearly express, critique ideas and provide clear path forward to stakeholders
- Attention to detail with emphasis on elegance and simplicity over complexity
- Drive designs for commercially viable solutions that will generate profit and revenue to the organization
- Drive team development plans for employee retention and growth within the organization
- Values that align with our company's values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique
- Experience working within a matrix organization that delivered large and complex hardware with integrated software controls
Bonus points for
- Experience with power system analytical tools like PSCAD, PSS/E, ETAP, MATLAB etc. to analyze and simulate electrical systems
- Experience in PCBA design, establishing supply chain and driving production for circuit boards
- Experience with CAD design tools such as: NX, SolidWorks, etc. for mechanical design of complex electrical systems.
- Experience with product lifecycle management of technology
- Experience in developing advanced technology concepts and trade studies based on latest technological trends in the field of power electronics and power systems
Must-have Requirements
- Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
- Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics
- Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
$170,000 - $250,000 a year
Salary range for this full-time position + equity + benefits. The actual salary will depend on level, location, qualifications, and experience. The range displayed on each job posting reflects new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Benefits include:
