What They Do

Enviva specializes in the production of industrial wood pellets, which serve as a renewable alternative to coal. These pellets are manufactured from sustainable woody biomass sourced primarily from the U.S. Southeast. The company’s operations encompass the entire supply chain, from raw material aggregation to pellet production and global distribution. Enviva’s products are primarily used for power generation and industrial applications, including sustainable aviation fuel production. The company’s business model relies heavily on long-term contracts with major utility and industrial clients in Europe and Asia, positioning itself as a leader in the biomass energy sector (source: envivabiomass.com).

Projects & Track Record

Enviva operates ten pellet plants across the U.S. Southeast, with a combined production capacity of approximately 6.2 million metric tons per year. Notable facilities include plants in Ahoskie, NC; Amory, MS; and Cottondale, FL. The company also manages deep-water marine terminals in Virginia, North Carolina, and Mississippi to facilitate global exports. Enviva’s pellets have displaced over 19 million metric tons of coal since its inception, underscoring its impact on reducing fossil fuel dependency. The company’s client base includes major power producers in the UK, EU, and Japan, as well as industrial clients like Alder Fuels for sustainable aviation fuel (source: envivabiomass.com).

Recent Developments

In 2023, Enviva announced the return of co-founder John Keppler as Executive Chairman and secured $246 million through a private investment led by its largest shareholders. The company is expanding its production capacity with new plants in Alabama and Mississippi. However, Enviva has faced scrutiny over its sustainability claims and financial stability, culminating in a Chapter 11 filing in 2024. These developments highlight both the company’s growth ambitions and the challenges it faces in maintaining operational and financial health (source: envivabiomass.com).

Working There

Enviva offers a range of roles across its operations, including positions in manufacturing, supply chain, commercial sales, and sustainability. The company’s headquarters in Bethesda, MD, and regional offices in Raleigh, NC, support corporate functions, while plant-site roles are concentrated in the U.S. Southeast. Enviva emphasizes a culture of safety, integrity, and community engagement. While specific benefits are not detailed publicly, typical offerings include health insurance and retirement plans. Prospective employees should review current job postings for detailed information on benefits and compensation (source: envivabiomass.com).
