Job Description
Ulteig is seeking talented and motivated candidates for a Cultural Resource Supervisor - Principal Investigator (PI) position. The selected candidate will focus on leading and growing the Cultural Resources Group. The Cultural Resources Supervisor - PI will report directly to the Technical Manager and will interact closely with the environmental team and other business units such as sales, marketing, account management, and project management. The Cultural Resources Supervisor - PI should be a self-starting technical leader with expertise in consulting, leadership, communication, and resource management. This team member will direct and complete cultural resource compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations for public and private clients across our Lifeline Sectors: Transportation, Renewables, Power, and Water, as well as other industries we serve. Our goal is to assist clients with developing an approach that balances development with cultural resources protection. This is an opportunity to shape a team and process that reflects your experience, talents, and preferred approach. Candidate will have flexibility to be based in our office in Bismarck, North Dakota, and/or remotely in western North Dakota, and is expected to occasionally travel for fieldwork within the region.
The Cultural Resource Supervisor - PI will support and manage new and existing projects as well as conduct business development. Proven experience in cultural resources analysis, compliance, and Tribal/public/stakeholder involvement will be needed to lead, author, and review technical reports. The applicant should have direct experience with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), and related surveys/documentation/approvals.
This team member will have frequent direct contact with regulatory agencies, tribes, and clients. This person will also work with multidisciplinary project teams, with proven experience to lead through the process. Candidate must be motivated to identify, pursue, and expand Ulteig's client base and industry presence, while being responsive to our current client needs. The successful candidate must be organized, detail-oriented, have strong oral and written communication skills, and be able to prioritize and work simultaneously on multiple projects.
What You'll Do
Management Responsibilities - 25%
- Provide strategic direction, leadership, and technical oversight for employees on achieving individual, team, department, and organizational goals
- Oversee the activities of team members
- Actively develop staff's technical, leadership, and soft skills through annual goals, career development planning, one-on-one meetings, and performance reviews
- Communicate department and team-level decisions, strategies, and approaches, as well as the rationale behind them
- Facilitate weekly team meetings and actively manage team resource planning
- Assist in the development of communication and onboarding plans for new hires
- Actively support and be involved in finding and hiring new talent
- Support team and department employee engagement efforts
Business Development Responsibilities - 25%
- Manage, develop, and leverage existing client relationships by staying in regular contact with key clients
- Engage new clients through professional networking, marketing, and exceptional customer service and support
- Coordinate with members of Market Leaders and others throughout the organization to promote revenue growth and expansion of services with existing and prospective clients
- Support proposal efforts by developing, providing resources, and reviewing proposals in coordination with the Proposal Development Team, project managers, and other departments
Project Related Responsibilities - 50%
- Lead, manage, organize, and direct cultural resources work teams for the purpose of NHPA and due diligence compliance (e.g., literature review, field inventory, data recovery, mitigation) in support of projects for various industries and markets
- Provide oversight, review, and interpretation of data as part of new or ongoing investigations, mitigation, or monitoring projects
- Coordinate and assist with project desktop and field efforts
- Communicate cultural, scientific, and technical information to the project team and stakeholders
- Prepare and review cultural resources reports and related materials
- Assist public and private clients with historic properties and Tribal coordination/compliance
- Develop lasting professional relationships with current clients through quality client support
- Prepare and manage proposals, scopes of services, schedules, and budgets
What We Expect from You
- Advanced degree (e.g., Master's, Doctorate) in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field, and meets the Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualification Standards for archaeology
- 10-15+ years of related experience (advanced degree may count toward experience), preferably in consulting
Thorough understanding of and experience with NEPA, NHPA, and other state, federal, and local regulations pertaining to historic properties and Tribal consultation - Strong oral and written communication skills
- Effective time-management, written communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively independently and in team situations, as well as establish strong relationships with other teams
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and applicable industry-related software packages (e.g., ArcGIS, Field Maps
- Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a 4-wheel drive pickup; trailering and utility terrain vehicle (UTV) operation experience is a plus
- Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to walk at least 5 miles per day in rough terrain and at least 10 miles per day in flat terrain
- Must be capable of using shovels, operating screens, and other equipment associated with testing in the field
- Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather
- Must be willing to travel occasionally for fieldwork with overnight stays
- Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement
- Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S

Additional Opportunity Details:
Target Base Compensation Range for this role is $108,000 - $146,000
Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your job-specific skills, education, training, job location, number of years of experience related to this role, and comparison to other employees already in this role.
