What They Do

Uplight is a private clean energy technology company that specializes in providing utility-focused software solutions. Founded through the merger of Tendril and Simple Energy, Uplight has expanded its capabilities through strategic acquisitions, including FirstFuel and EnergySavvy, to create a comprehensive suite of services aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and customer engagement (source: uplight.com). The company’s core technology revolves around an AI-powered flexibility management platform that integrates distributed energy resources (DERs) such as smart thermostats and solar panels, enabling utilities to optimize energy generation and consumption (source: uplight.com). Uplight's platform processes an impressive 30 billion data points per hour, providing utilities with accurate event forecasting and facilitating over 268 million customer interactions annually (source: uplight.com). This technology supports over 80 utilities across North America, Asia, and Europe, showcasing Uplight's significant impact on the global energy landscape (source: bitscale.ai).

Projects & Track Record

Uplight has successfully managed several notable projects that highlight its capabilities in energy management. In 2020, the company managed enough electrical load to curtail the entire Knutson Power Plant in Boulder, Colorado, demonstrating its effectiveness in demand response initiatives (source: uplight.com). Additionally, Uplight partnered with Consumers Energy and Google to distribute free Google Nest smart thermostats to up to 100,000 households in Michigan, achieving five times higher enrollments compared to traditional programs (source: smartenergycc.org). The company is also involved in ongoing projects that utilize AI-powered virtual power plants (VPPs) to enhance demand response capacity, significantly increasing it by 31% during peak periods (source: uplight.com). Uplight's client base includes over 80 electric and gas utilities globally, with partnerships extending to more than 65 ecosystem players, including major technology providers like Google and Schneider Electric (source: uplight.com).

Recent Developments

In the past two years, Uplight has received multiple accolades, including recognition as the 2025 Home Energy Management Leader and the 2024 Customer Engagement and Grid-Edge DERMS Leader, which underscores its strong market position (source: uplight.com). The company is actively advancing its decarbonization initiatives, exemplified by its Annual Voice of the Energy Customer Survey, which analyzes residential customers' attitudes toward green technologies and electric vehicle ownership (source: uplight.com). While there have been no major acquisitions or funding rounds reported since its 2021 valuation milestone, Uplight continues to enhance its AI models for demand response strategies and is focused on building capacity for virtual power plants (source: uplight.com). These efforts are aimed at addressing the growing need for data center load flexibility and promoting electrification equity (source: uplight.com).

Working There

Uplight offers a diverse range of roles across various departments, including technology, growth and commercial, operations, and people operations. The company is particularly focused on hiring talent in AI/ML engineering and platform development, with leadership from experienced professionals in the software and demand-side solutions sectors (source: uplight.com). Job opportunities are available at its headquarters in Boulder, as well as in its offices located in Boston, Vancouver, and Pune, supporting a workforce of over 450 employees (source: bitscale.ai). Uplight's company culture emphasizes inclusivity and social responsibility, as evidenced by initiatives like the Enlighten Task Force and the establishment of employee-led Affinity Resource Groups (source: uplight.com). Job Description

Uplight is creating a new category of energy. We make software that manages energy resources in homes and businesses-including things like smart thermostats, electric vehicles, solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and even people's behavior-to generate, shift, or save energy to balance the grid, making it more efficient and reliable. This creates clean energy capacity that can be used by the power grid instead of burning more fossil fuels. Our solutions accelerate the transition to clean energy and save money for energy customers.

We are seeking a Market Development Analyst to join our team and help us achieve our ambitious goals for our business and the planet. As a Market Development Analyst, you will be the primary intelligence hub for our regulatory and commercial teams. Your core responsibility is to navigate the complex landscape of state utility commission filings, extracting the critical data - budgets, program goals, and policy mandates - needed to fuel our regulatory advocacy. You will dive deep into specific regulatory filings to help senior Market Development staff form strategic engagements with Commissions including meetings, participating in workgroups, submitting formal comments, participating in proceedings, and engaging with utilities on their filings.

You will also serve as a strategic conduit for our growth organization by finding and translating dense filings into actionable intelligence, arming our Sales team with the "why" behind a utility's needs, directly influencing our pipeline and win rates on RFP opportunities.

How you will make an impact

  • Navigate the Dockets: Find, track, and review specific state utility commission proceedings and legislation across target states to identify risks and opportunities for our Customer Engagement, Energy Efficiency, VPP, and DERMS solutions through trade associations, external partners, and strategic research.
  • Summarize & Synthesize: Utilize AI and advanced research tools along with your own expertise to produce high-level summaries as well as detailed overviews of regulatory filings for internal Market Development and other Uplight teams.
  • Support Policy Advocacy: Conduct the foundational research required for senior staff to draft formal comments, testimony, and thought leadership pieces that influence the regulatory landscape.

What you get to do

  • Empower Sales Development: Equip the Sales teams with specific utility pain points, goals, and budgets found in filings to ensure all utility engagement is highly informed.
  • Strategic RFP Support: Enhance our proposal win rates by providing regulatory intelligence to RFP response teams to ensure our proposals are aligned with what the utility truly values and are differentiated from competitors.
  • Pipeline Identification: Review upcoming filing dates and program cycles to find new sales opportunities before they become public RFPs and manage the pipeline identification process.

What you will contribute

Your success will be measured by delivering high impact data and information across a dedicated portfolio in the following areas:

  • Market Coverage: Provide ongoing regulatory tracking and perform deep dive analysis on select states and utilities of interest.
  • Sales Enablement: Deliver deep-dive research support for key sales opportunities and RFP responses.
  • Strategic Research: Execute research projects, such as benchmarking competitor performance or analyzing avoided cost trends buried in regulatory data.
  • Organizational Knowledge: Maintain and update Market Development trackers and resources with summaries to ensure regulatory intelligence is easily accessible across the company.
  • Professional Presence: Opportunity to attend select industry conferences such as NARUC.

What you bring to Uplight

  • Experience: 2+ years working in the regulatory, utility, energy, or climate space.
  • Regulatory Literacy: You have an understanding of state utility commission proceedings and can navigate dockets to find the specific information that matters.
  • Strategic Communication: You can distill complex regulatory and legislative language into clear, actionable takeaways in both written and verbal form.
  • Curiosity & Ownership: Continual thirst to learn and improve while also ensuring timely delivery of outputs to colleagues.
  • Travel Ability: The ability to travel for work trips when in-person presence is important. (estimated 5% with potential for growth as experience expands)

Bonus Points

  • Direct experience working for a State Utility Commission or a regulated utility.
  • Technical understanding of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) or DERMS.
  • Previous experience in a "Market Development" or "Regulatory Affairs" role within a clean-tech SaaS company.
  • A background in economics or policy analysis specifically related to Demand Side Management.
