What They Do

Fluence Energy focuses primarily on energy storage technology solutions and services, including design, delivery, integration, optimization software, and control platforms for renewables and storage integration into grids (source: fluenceenergy.com). Its core products encompass standardized energy storage systems such as Gridstack, Ultrastack, Sunstack, and Edgestack, designed for utility-scale, industrial, commercial, and renewable-integrated applications, paired with the Fluence IQ Digital Platform for AI-optimized asset management, rapid deployment, and maximization of clean energy usage (source: mapquest.com). These offerings build on pioneering technologies from AES Energy Storage (Advancion platform) and Siemens (Siestorage), providing container-based systems, comprehensive services, and cloud-based software to address grid challenges in a transforming energy landscape (source: pestel-analysis.com). Target markets include utilities, developers, commercial and industrial clients, and service providers across utility-scale projects, with a global footprint in 24 countries and territories (source: fluenceenergy.com). Fluence holds a competitive position as the global market leader in energy storage, having topped the Navigant Research utility-scale energy storage leaderboard in 2018, named one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies, and deploying the largest fleet of energy storage projects worldwide (source: fluenceenergy.com).

Projects & Track Record

By 2021, Fluence had more than 2.4 gigawatts (GW) of energy storage projects in operation or awarded across 24 countries and territories, reflecting its early track record in utility-scale deployments (source: fluenceenergy.com). The company maintains the largest deployed fleet of energy storage projects globally, with deployments supporting grid integration of renewables in key markets, though specific completed project names, locations, capacities, and years are not detailed in available sources beyond aggregate figures (source: fluenceenergy.com). Ongoing operations emphasize global expansion, with projects and contracts secured through 2020 and beyond, focusing on new markets for storage (source: dcfmodeling.com). Key clients span utilities, developers, and industrial users, with partnerships rooted in its Siemens and AES origins, though specific client names are not listed; the company serves a broad ecosystem including power sector stakeholders worldwide (source: fluenceenergy.com).

Recent Developments

The provided sources, primarily from 2021 and earlier, do not cover major announcements, contracts won, acquisitions, mergers, funding rounds, awards, certifications, or milestones specifically from 2024-2025, limiting verifiable details to pre-2022 events such as the 2021 IPO raising $867.9 million (source: dcfmodeling.com). Fluence was recognized as topping the Navigant Research leaderboard in 2018 and listed among Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies around that period, but no awards from the last two years (2024-2025) are documented here (source: fluenceenergy.com). Expansion efforts continue through Fluence Next, a unit for commercializing new technology-driven opportunities in power and energy shifts, as noted in 2021 job descriptions (source: fluenceenergy.com).

Job Description

The Energy Trading Analyst position sits within Fluence's Digital business unit. Fluence's Mosaic™ software is an algorithmic BESS optimization and bidding system that uses machine learning techniques, advanced price forecasting, and operations research principles to algorithmically bid & operate energy storage assets within electricity markets. Following the successful commercialization of the Mosaic software in the US and Australian electricity markets, Fluence has localized its Mosaic software for the Japanese market and has commenced supporting several customers trading operational BESS.

This position is within the Digital business unit's Energy Markets team, which operates at the nexus of business development, product development, trading, and operations. The Energy Trading Analyst will bring deep expertise and experience in market trading and physical operations, providing strategic input into the product development process to further enhance Mosaic's technical capabilities, and to refine Fluence's commercial service offering and competitive positioning in the market.

In addition, the Energy Trading Analyst will work closely with live customers to support their day-to-day trading activities, helping customers extract maximum performance from the Mosaic software via data-driven analysis and expert advice.

The Energy Trading Analyst will join Fluence's growing local team in Japan, will report to the APAC Energy Markets Director, and will work closely alongside the Japan-based Business Development (Sales) team. This position will also collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders in the Product Management, Data Science, Marketing, and Account Management teams withing the Digital business unit.

Key Responsibilities

The Energy Trading Analyst will support the growth of the Mosaic software in Japan, and will support Fluence's customers by:

Supporting the product development process (Solutions Engineering)

  • Act as an internal subject matter expert on electricity market operations and regulatory developments - supporting colleagues in the Product Management and Data Science teams with subject matter expertise around Japanese market rules, market systems, and bidding and dispatch procedures.
  • Through discussion with current and prospective customers, identify unmet needs and customer pain points, and communicate them to the Product Management and Data Science teams, assisting those teams with the scoping of new Mosaic modules and functionalities that increase Mosaic's capabilities and value creation.

Supporting live customer assets (Trading & Operations)

  • Capture and understand clients' commercial imperatives and objectives, and help clients leverage Mosaic's features and capabilities to effectively achieve their objectives
  • Monitor the trading outcomes of Mosaic-bid BESS assets, conducting ex-post reviews to ensure that any issues are identified, and associated lessons learned socialised appropriately to internal and external stakeholders (as well as ensuring successes are highlighted and celebrated).
  • Monitor the market and provide proactive, ex-ante advice to clients in relation to any market conditions that may warrant intervention or override of the algorithmic bid strategy, as well as advice on effective strategies to implement overrides.

Supporting the sales process (Sales Engineering)

  • While the Energy Trading Analyst is not responsible for sales, their expertise will at times be called upon to support the sales process in a 'Sales Engineering' capacity, helping to explain the market and the technical details of Fluence's service offering.

Location, Language, and Culture

  • The position will be based out of Fluence's Tokyo office in Marunouchi - hybrid working arrangements are supported. The position will require fluency in the Japanese language and at least moderate proficiency in English.
  • A successful Energy Trading Analyst will demonstrate a willingness to wear multiple hats in a start-up environment, a willingness to collaborate and help a small team thrive, and the desire to help shape the strategy of an innovative new software product that supports Japan's energy transition. Occasional business travel will be required.

What will our ideal candidate bring to Fluence?

  • At least 5 years of experience working in the Japanese electricity markets, ideally with experience at an aggregator or BESS operator, and familarity with physical electricity trading
  • Experience with electricty and balancing market operations, and the bidding, dispatch and settlement process, including interfacing with TSOs in this process.
  • Familarity and comfort with the types of IT systems that asset owners and aggregators use to manage the bidding and dispatch process, including EMS and AC/RA systems.
  • Experience with and recognition of the operational challenges facing BESS in Japan's electricity market, and a passion for developing and advancing industry best practices.
  • A genuine interest in BESS and electricity markets, the role they play in the power system, and how they interface with the Japanese markets and power system.
  • Comfort handling large datasets, and distilling and communicating actionable analytical insights to diverse stakeholders
  • Business proficiency in the Japanese language (fluency), and at least moderate proficiency in the English language.
  • A problem-solving attitude, willingness to wear multiple hats, ability to work dynamically with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders, and the enthusiasm to thrive while working in the start-up phase of a business with high growth potential.
  • A desire to contribute to the growth of the BESS industry in Japan, to help the industry innovate, and to advance the role BESS will play in supporting Japan's energy transition.
