About Unbound Potential

Company overview

Unbound Potential AG, privately held

Thalwil, Switzerland

2023

Approximately 10 employees (source: linkedin.com)

What they do

Unbound Potential develops innovative long-duration energy-storage systems based on a membrane-less redox-flow-battery architecture designed for large-scale, stationary electricity storage applications. Their technology focuses on eliminating the membrane typically used in conventional redox-flow batteries by optimising the three-dimensional interface between electrolytes to enhance ion exchange, thereby reducing system complexity and costs while improving efficiency (source: top100startups.swiss). The battery chemistry is organic, avoiding reliance on critical mined materials such as lithium and vanadium, which positions the company as a sustainable alternative in the energy storage sector (source: unbound-potential.com). Their modular and scalable storage systems target industrial facilities with on-site photovoltaic generation, off-grid energy systems, energy islands, offshore wind sites, energy-intensive industries, and utilities seeking long-duration storage solutions (source: unbound-potential.com). The company’s approach is still at an early stage, focusing on laboratory and prototype development rather than commercial deployment (source: preqin.com).

Projects & track record

Unbound Potential achieved its first hardware milestone with a 500-watt tabletop demonstrator completed in September 2023, which successfully demonstrated the practical operation of its membrane-less redox-flow-battery concept (source: preqin.com). The company plans to deploy its first containerised storage system in Thalwil by mid-2026, representing a local demonstration of a system designed, prototyped, and assembled at its headquarters (source: unbound-potential.com). While no utility-scale projects with publicly specified megawatt capacities or named customers have been completed, the company’s development record includes extensive laboratory work and prototype preparation focused on European industrial and utility markets (source: preqin.com). Their geographic presence remains concentrated in Thalwil, Switzerland, with a commercial focus on industrial sites, utilities, and operators of off-grid or renewable-linked infrastructure (source: linkedin.com).

Recent developments

In September 2025, Unbound Potential secured a €6.4 million pre-seed funding round co-led by Founderful, Kvanted Ventures, and Zürcher Kantonalbank Asset Management, with participation from SPRIND, Innosuisse, Migros Pioneer Fund, and KlimUP (source: preqin.com). This round contributed to a total of €14.4 million in combined equity and grant funding raised since the company’s inception (source: unbound-potential.com). The funding is intended to advance the membrane-free battery technology and support pilot projects with partners, underpinning the company’s technical milestones such as the 500 W tabletop demonstrator and the planned containerised system deployment in 2026 (source: unbound-potential.com).

Working there

Unbound Potential offers roles across electrochemical research, mechanical engineering, fluidics, manufacturing scale-up, and business development, reflecting its cross-disciplinary startup environment where engineers, chemists, economists, and business professionals collaborate closely (source: unbound-potential.com). Internships include chemistry positions focused on designing electrolytes and redox couples for the membrane-less battery, as well as mechanical engineering roles involving component design, fluid dynamics analysis, and manufacturing process scaling (source: unbound-potential.com). Business development internships involve market research, competitor analysis, and translating techno-economic data to support engineering teams (source: unbound-potential.com). The company emphasises work-life balance and offers employees the opportunity to contribute directly to prototype development and manufacturing scale-up at its Thalwil location (source: unbound-potential.com).
