Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located in Golden, Colorado, is seeking a Researcher specializing in Buildings Resilience. This position is integral to advancing research and development in renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies, particularly focusing on thermal energy storage, phase change materials (PCMs), and thermal resilience in buildings. The successful candidate will engage in a variety of research activities aimed at enhancing the flexibility and resiliency of the grid and buildings, especially in low- and moderate-income and disadvantaged communities. The role requires a deep understanding of how different forms of energy storage can be integrated into building envelopes and equipment to benefit both buildings and communities. The researcher will be responsible for conducting thermal energy storage research, developing Python plugins for thermal switches, and performing experimental evaluations of building wall panels with innovative materials. This includes designing and fabricating full-scale prototypes and conducting experiments in environmental chambers. The candidate will also be expected to identify research and development opportunities, create decision-making tools for energy efficiency technologies, and contribute to the overall strategy for advancing building technologies. Responsibilities
- Conduct thermal energy storage research and analysis.
- Develop Python plugins for thermal switches in building envelopes.
- Perform experimental evaluations of building wall panels with phase change materials and other innovative materials.
- Conduct research on thermal resilience for buildings against extreme weather events.
- Optimize behind-the-meter thermal energy storage through modeling methodologies and simulation frameworks.
- Identify research and development opportunities in energy storage technologies for buildings.
- Create tools for decision-making regarding energy efficiency technologies for buildings.
Requirements
- Relevant PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Master's Degree with 3 or more years of experience, or Bachelor's Degree with 5 or more years of experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of engineering technical procedures and principles in the field.
- Experience in project management and leadership roles.
- Strong writing, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Good understanding of thermal energy storage systems and their impacts.
Nice-to-haves
