What They Do
The Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) specializes in environmental consulting, focusing on energy efficiency, housing retrofits, and alleviating fuel poverty. Unlike many organizations that emphasize hardware technologies such as solar panels or wind turbines, CSE's approach is centered on providing tailored household energy advice and casework, which has reached over 22,593 individuals in the latest reported year. This initiative has resulted in average savings of £1,106 per household, totaling over £25 million in savings for clients (source: cse.org.uk). CSE also plays a significant role in policy advocacy, influencing fairer energy practices and providing tools for local authorities and communities to take action towards net zero goals.
One of CSE's notable offerings is Retrofit West, a Community Interest Company launched in 2023, which serves as a one-stop-shop connecting homeowners in the West of England with independent retrofit advice and vetted installers. This initiative aims to build local supply chains and enhance the capacity for energy efficiency measures in the region (source: cse.org.uk). CSE's target markets include UK households facing fuel poverty, community organizations, and local authorities, with a national reach from its Bristol base. The organization has trained over 76,000 individuals since its inception, showcasing its commitment to community-led sustainable energy practices (source: cse.org.uk). As a charity, CSE differentiates itself through non-profit partnerships and a proven impact in supporting equitable energy transitions.
Projects & Track Record
CSE has a rich history of delivering impactful programs, having provided energy advice to over 400,000 individuals and training for 76,000 community actors since its establishment in 1979. In the most recent year, CSE scaled its services to assist 22,593 households and enabled 925 community organizations to take action against climate change and fuel poverty (source: cse.org.uk). A significant recent initiative is Retrofit West, which coordinates homeowner advice and vetted installers, marking it as one of the UK's few successful local retrofit one-stop-shops. This program aims to facilitate energy efficiency improvements without specific capacity metrics detailed (source: cse.org.uk). CSE's ongoing work includes household retrofit support, local authority guidance on net zero, and community empowerment, engaging tens of thousands in meaningful climate action.
Recent Developments
In the fiscal year ending 31 March 2024, CSE reported a record gross income of £8.99 million, a significant increase from £6.00 million the previous year. This growth was accompanied by an increase in assets to £3.52 million and total liabilities of £2.16 million (source: charitycommission.gov.uk). CSE achieved remarkable milestones, including £25 million in client savings, a 144% increase in efficiency measures installed, and the successful launch of Retrofit West in 2023, which has been pivotal for coordinated retrofits in the region (source: cse.org.uk). Additionally, trustee changes in 2024 saw the appointment of new members, enhancing the governance of the organization (source: charitycommission.gov.uk). CSE has not documented any acquisitions or external funding rounds in the recent years, focusing instead on its core mission and community impact.
Working There
CSE offers a variety of roles across different departments, including energy advice, casework, research, policy advocacy, community training, and education programs. As of the latest charity data, the organization employs approximately 120 individuals and has 18 volunteers supporting its operations (source: charitycommission.gov.uk). The majority of hiring occurs from its Bristol headquarters, with job postings indicating openings primarily in Bristol-based teams (source: charityjob.co.uk). CSE fosters a culture of partnership and collaboration, emphasizing governance policies that include procedures for handling bullying and harassment, complaints, and conflicts of interest. The organization is mission-driven, focusing on fuel poverty and climate action, supported by a dedicated team of staff, partners, and volunteers (source: cse.org.uk).
