Job Description

SP Energy Networks (SPEN) are working to achieve network targets set by the Scottish and UK Government as part of our journey to Net Zero. Our focus is on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. SPEN is building a dynamic network to meet the changing demands for electricity and increasingly, renewable electricity - safely, securely and sustainably in the communities we serve.

SP Energy Networks are experiencing an unprecedented level of network investment and demand for major connections. These works involve significant engineering deliverables at multiple sites across the SP Distribution territory.

The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for the high-level planning and network design of the deliverables associated with these projects. It is expected that the successful applicant will support the District Head of Planning and Network Investment (HOPNI) by contributing to the Investment plans and designs that will deliver the District's ED2 contract. Plans and designs must be produced in line with best practice, to a high standard of quality and within the required timescales.

What you'll be doing

  • Supporting the Head of Planning & Network Improvement to develop the high-level plan that will deliver the District's contribution to the ED2 Investment contract.
  • Ensuring that business plans are updated in line with changing business priorities and delivery performance, demonstrating practical innovative and agile solutions.
  • Taking ownership of designing and developing high-quality electrical network designs that align with the District's objectives.
  • Owning the handover of designs to the delivery teams.
  • Managing the District level forecasting of key service partners, direct labour and material reservation
  • Monitoring the delivery of outputs, incentive metrics and milestones in line with business targets
  • Effectively managing project risk and mitigate the impact of issues that may emerge.
  • Ensuring contracts are managed and maintained correctly.
  • Developing accurate capital expenditure forecasts and output projections on assigned projects, with full accountability for project, contractual and financial governance.
  • Creating, managing and monitoring project schedules in MS Project.
  • Driving continuous improvement by completing project and contract reviews, identifying lessons learned and sharing these with the wider business.
  • Creating proposals and introducing changes for best project management practice and behaviour across the wider project portfolio

What you'll bring

We are looking for excellent candidates with project management skills and an ability to devise solutions to complex problems. They will have a proven track record of designing and/or delivering engineering projects, preferable within the electricity/utility sectors.

The successful candidate will be capable of delivering designs to agreed quality standards and timescales and will have an understanding high-voltage electrical safety (training and authorisation will be provided).

Additionally, they will have:

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Experience of customer management.
  • Experience of contractor management.
  • Ability to review, dispute and agree variation orders.
  • Experience of financial management.
  • Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Self-motivated and able to take responsibility.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships at all levels and with internal and external stakeholders

Minimum Requirements

  • HNC in Electrical Engineering or similar
  • BEng (Hons) in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (Advantageous)
  • Considerable industry experience (Advantageous)
