Job Description

Act as the central point of contact for sustainability, coordinating advisors, contractors and supply chain partners to deliver outcomes across all project phases

Drive, implement and assure delivery of sustainability strategies, policies and commitments across major HVDC infrastructure projects / joint ventures.

Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory and parent company requirements, embedding best practice, innovation and continuous improvement in sustainability performance.

What you'll be doing

Provide strategic sustainability leadership and governance across the project, coordinating sustainability advisors and wider sustainability resource (including Transmission Owner and partner organisations) to ensure consistent standards and delivery.

Develop, maintain and improve sustainability documentation (policies, strategies, procedures) within the project management system, aligned to parent company and National Grid standards.

Lead creation and delivery of the project sustainability strategy and delivery plan across all phases (early/detailed design, tender, construction and delivery).

Coordinate and assure delivery of sustainability requirements across project teams, contractors and supply chain; embed sustainability and ethical performance into procurement and contract standards.

Monitor, report and assure sustainability performance data (e.g., carbon, waste, resources, social value and biodiversity), ensuring completeness, accuracy and validation using appropriate tools/systems (e.g., Evotix, BREEAM, PAS 2080).

Act as primary point of contact for sustainability with governance, parent company teams, regulators and external stakeholders; deliver communications, training, awareness and engagement activities.

Develop and deliver assurance plans and internal audit programmes; hold the supply chain to account for sustainability compliance, driving corrective actions and closing out findings.

Lead continuous improvement through risk/opportunity reviews, lessons learned and sharing best practice across projects and parent companies.

Oversee sustainability funding and innovation initiatives (e.g., Carbon Innovation Fund) and lead specialist areas including nature/biodiversity, social value and ethical procurement (modern slavery and human rights).

What you'll bring

Strong knowledge of sustainability management in major infrastructure projects, including governance, compliance and performance assurance.

Experience developing and implementing sustainability strategies, plans, policies and procedures within a project management system.

Competence in monitoring and reporting sustainability performance (carbon, waste, resources, social value, biodiversity) and validating data quality.

Familiarity with relevant tools/standards such as Evotix, BREEAM and PAS 2080 (or equivalent).

Understanding of ethical procurement requirements, including modern slavery and human rights compliance.

Ability to lead engagement, training and communications with internal teams, regulators and external stakeholders.

Minimum Criteria

  • Degree level qualification, preferably in an environmental discipline.
  • Excellent track record/experience within Sustainability sector/industry
  • Postgraduate qualification in an environmental-related discipline.
  • Membership of IEMA or CEnv
  • Understanding of the utility environment.
