The Ameresco Solar O&M team is looking for a qualified Safety Manager to join its team. The O&M Safety Manager develops, implements, and oversees all safety programs, policies, and compliance activities across the company's C&I, Distributed Generation (DG), and Utility-Scale Solar PV and BESS O&M portfolio. This role serves as the primary safety leader for field operations, driving a culture of safety excellence across all four operating regions. The ideal candidate combines deep knowledge of electrical safety standards (NFPA 70E, OSHA 1910/1926), hands-on field experience in solar and energy storage environments, and the leadership skills to drive safety accountability at every level. This position works closely with Corporate Safety to ensure Business Unit alignment while tailoring programs to the unique hazards of O&M field operations.

Responsibilities

Job Hazard Assessments & Site Safety

  • Lead and conduct rooftop and general site Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs) for all C&I, DG, and utility-scale solar PV and BESS sites prior to and during O&M activities.
  • Identify, evaluate, and document site-specific hazards including fall protection, electrical hazards, chemical exposures, confined spaces, and environmental factors.
  • Develop and maintain standardized JHA templates; ensure completed assessments are archived and accessible to field teams.
  • Conduct onsite compliance visits and audits to verify adherence to safety plans, permit conditions, and regulatory requirements.

Safety Training & Development

  • Conduct routine safety training across all four operating regions for field electricians, technicians, and ROC team members performing remote monitoring and control activities.
  • Support the National O&M Trainer effort through curriculum collaboration, specialized safety module delivery, and alignment with current regulations and best practices.
  • Develop and deliver targeted training on LOTO procedures, arc flash awareness, fall protection, battery safety/thermal runaway response, PPE usage, and emergency response.
  • Maintain training records and certifications tracking to ensure OSHA and company compliance.

Emergency Response Planning

  • Formalize Emergency Response Plans (ERPs) and develop quick-reference materials tailored for ROC operators and field operations team members.
  • Structure and support routine fire drills and emergency response audits to evaluate team readiness across all regions.
  • Coordinate with local emergency services, AHJs, and site owners to align ERPs with site-specific and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Refine emergency procedures based on drill outcomes, incident reviews, and evolving industry standards for solar PV and BESS facilities

Safety SOPs, Manuals & Documentation

  • Author, refine, and maintain Safety SOPs with direct applicability to O&M tasks, ensuring procedures are practical, field-ready, and consistently followed.
  • Generate and evaluate O&M Safety Manuals; collaborate with Corporate Safety to ensure Business Unit alignment and organizational consistency.
  • Ensure all safety documentation is version-controlled, regularly reviewed, and accessible to field personnel and management.

PPE, Equipment Compliance & Procurement

  • Track employee PPE inventory, inspection schedules, and expiration dates to ensure continuous compliance with safety standards.
  • Support PPE procurement including the Boot Program, Class 0 glove inventory, proving units, voltage-rated tools, and other safety-critical equipment.
  • Establish and enforce inspection/testing protocols for safety-critical PPE and equipment (insulated gloves, hot sticks, arc flash suits, fall protection harnesses).

Safety Technology & Systems Management

  • Work within the AssetPlanner CMMS daily to manage safety workflows, documentation, inspections, and compliance tracking across the O&M portfolio.
  • Lead the Lone worker application rollout and provide continuous support, ensuring proper usage, monitoring, and escalation procedures are in place.
  • Leverage technology platforms to streamline safety reporting, audit tracking, and KPI dashboards.
  • KPI Tracking, Reporting & Continuous Improvement
  • Track and report on safety KPIs including hours without incident, TRIR, LTCR, DART rate, incident reports, near-miss reports, and leading safety indicators.
  • Analyze safety data and trends to identify improvement areas and develop targeted corrective action plans.
  • Prepare and present regular safety performance reports to O&M leadership and Corporate Safety stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive safety management experience, with at least 3 years in solar PV, BESS, renewable energy, or electrical construction/maintenance. (Equivalent combination of education and experience considered (e.g., Associate's degree with 8+ years of progressive safety management in the energy sector)
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, EHS, Safety Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction or General Industry certification.

Additional Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience conducting JHAs and site safety audits in rooftop, ground-mount, and carport solar environments.
  • Proven track record developing and delivering safety training programs to multi-regional field teams.
  • Experience creating and managing Emergency Response Plans for electrical and energy storage facilities.
  • Familiarity with CMMS platforms (AssetPlanner or similar) for safety and maintenance workflow management.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction or General Industry certification.
  • Preferred: NFPA 70E Qualified Person designation or equivalent arc flash safety training.
  • Preferred: First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification.
  • Expert knowledge of OSHA 1910/1926 standards as applied to solar PV and BESS O&M operations.
  • Strong working knowledge of NFPA 70E, NFPA 855 (Energy Storage Systems), and NEC/NESC requirements.
  • Understanding of BESS safety hazards including thermal runaway, off-gassing, and arc flash risks specific to DC systems.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to develop clear SOPs, training materials, and safety documentation.
  • Proficiency with CMMS platforms (AssetPlanner), lone worker monitoring applications, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong organizational skills managing multiple priorities across geographically dispersed teams.
  • Ability to lead safety culture initiatives and influence behavioral change at all organizational levels.

The anticipated base salary range for this role is $92,000-$134,000 (presented in good faith). In addition to base pay, employees receive a comprehensive benefits package, such as health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off, and may be eligible for performance incentives, bonuses, commissions, or equity, depending on the role.
