Responsibilities
The Head of Engineering - PV & BESS is responsible for leading the technical development, design, and optimization of photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects from early-stage feasibility through construction handover. This role oversees a multidisciplinary engineering team and ensures that all designs meet performance, safety, cost, and compliance requirements. The position includes direct ownership of energy yield assessments, layout optimization, and analysis of the technical due diligence to support investment decisions and project development.
Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of PV, electrical, civil, and storage engineers.
- Coordinate workload distribution, resource planning, and technical training.
- Promote best practices, quality standards, and continuous improvement.

PV & BESS System Design
- Oversee preliminary and detailed engineering design for utility-scale PV and hybrid PV+BESS projects.
- Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and grid-connection requirements.
- Approve key engineering deliverables including single-line diagrams, layouts, cable sizing, grounding design, and protection schemes.

Energy Yield Assessment (EYA)
- Lead the preparation and validation of EYAs using industry-standard tools (e.g., PVsyst, PlantPredict, SolarFarmer).
- Review irradiation data, losses, shading analysis, and degradation assumptions.
- Provide annual production estimates and uncertainty analysis for financial modelling.

Layout Optimization
- Optimize site layouts for maximum energy yield, cost efficiency, and constructability.
- Evaluate multiple design scenarios, including module orientation, tracking strategies, row spacing, and DC/AC ratios.
- Integrate topography, geotechnical constraints, environmental limitations, and interconnection requirements.

BESS Engineering & Integration
- Lead sizing, architecture, and control strategy development for BESS assets.
- Evaluate use cases such as energy shifting, frequency regulation, ramp-rate control, and hybrid plant optimization.
- Coordinate with vendors on technical specifications, system architecture, and performance guarantees.

Vendor & Stakeholder Coordination
- Manage technical discussions with equipment suppliers (modules, inverters, trackers, batteries).
- Support procurement through RFIs, RFPs, and technical bid evaluations.
- Collaborate with development, construction, procurement, and asset management teams.

Grid Connection & Electrical Engineering
- Oversee grid modelling studies (load flow, short circuit, harmonic analysis).
- Ensure designs meet TSO/DSO standards and interconnection requirements.

Project Management & Documentation
- Ensure all engineering deliverables are delivered on time and within budget.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and design change logs.
- Support construction teams during installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or similar.
- 7-10+ years of engineering experience in utility-scale PV and/or BESS projects.
- Strong expertise in PVsyst and layout optimization tools.
- Proven leadership experience managing technical teams.
- Solid understanding of IEC/IEEE standards, grid codes, and EPC interfaces.
- Demonstrated experience with project development, EPC coordination, and technical due diligence.
- Experience with hybrid PV+storage plant optimization models.
- Familiarity with PV syst for optimization tasks.
