The Opportunity
Are you ready to play a pivotal role in Australia's clean energy transition? This is your opportunity to bring your deep technical expertise to a role that shapes how new generation and load connect to the grid.
We are excited to share that we have multiple opportunities available to join our Network business unit as a Principal Engineer, Network Connections, helping enable the safe, efficient, and future-ready integration of renewable generation, storage, and major customer loads across the NSW transmission network.
Reporting to the Team Lead Network Connections, you'll provide specialist technical advice on generator and load connections, lead performance standard reviews and compliance assessments, and collaborate closely with Network Planning, Network Operations, AEMO, and industry stakeholders to deliver high-quality outcomes.
These roles can be based in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane, with flexibility for remote work.
What You Will Be Responsible For
As a trusted technical specialist, you will lead engineering activities that support the connection of synchronous and asynchronous generators and major loads. You'll contribute to the development of robust network solutions, guide improvements to connection processes, and represent Transgrid in industry forums.
You will also support investigations into system-wide issues and provide expert advice on matters that influence the reliability, security, and future capabilities of the NSW transmission network.
Key accountabilities include:
- Lead technical assessments for generator and load connections, including performance standards, compliance evaluations, and engineering reviews.
- Investigate wide-area system issues and develop robust network solutions in collaboration with Network Planning and Network Operations.
- Contribute to the improvement of connection processes, policies, and technical guidelines.
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, analysis, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide timely expert advice and briefing material on complex engineering matters.
- Represent Transgrid in technical discussions, industry working groups, and stakeholder negotiations, including with AEMO.
- Manage multiple large-scale projects concurrently while maintaining strong communication and follow-through.
About You
You are a highly skilled and collaborative engineering professional with strong technical depth in power systems and generator connections. Known for your ability to solve complex problems and engage confidently with stakeholders, you bring both credibility and clarity to every interaction.
You thrive in dynamic environments, are comfortable leading technical discussions, and are passionate about supporting Australia's shift to renewable energy.
You bring:
- A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline (postgraduate qualifications desirable).
- Chartered or registered professional engineer status (e.g., CPEng, RPEQ).
- Extensive experience in leading synchronous and asynchronous generator and load connection projects.
- Strong knowledge of Electrical Engineering principles, the National Electricity Rules (NER), Generator Performance Standards (GPS), protection systems, SCADA, and transmission or generation operations.
- Advanced power system modelling experience with tools such as PSS??E and PSCAD (PowerFactory, SSAT or Mudpack advantageous).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A thorough understanding of network planning standards, the NEM, and industry legislation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with a focus on quality, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
- Experience working within quality assurance systems and applying risk management principles.
- Programming skills in Python for analysis and automation (Desirable).
