Position Summary

We are seeking a remote - or San Jose, CA - Senior Electrical Engineer, Power Systems to lead the design, analysis, and deployment of medium- and low-voltage electrical systems powering our Thermal Energy Storage (TES) technology, from first-of-a-kind test rigs to large-scale commercial facilities.

While this role can be remote, you must be located in the US and willing to travel sometimes up to 50% to the project site, or California, depending on the project phase. Or, in California at our HQ.

In this position, you'll support the engineering, construction, and commissioning of electrical equipment and systems, ensuring full compliance with applicable codes and standards. You'll collaborate with other disciplines to achieve seamless integration of the electrical system into the overall plant design.

This is an opportunity to be a part of the team redefining industrial energy and enabling a zero-carbon future.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Own electrical system design for facilities up to 100+ MW: develop one-line and three-line diagrams, control schematics, cable schedules, and equipment layouts for MV (up to ~35 kV) and LV power systems.
  • Perform and review power systems studies in ETAP or SKM, including load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc-flash (IEEE 1584), motor starting, grounding, and transient stability analyses.
  • Specify and procure major equipment such as transformers, MV/LV switchgear, switchboards (UL 891/1558), MCCs, protective relays (SEL/GE), VFDs, UPS, and grounding/lighting systems. Lead RFQs, technical bid evaluations, and vendor selection in partnership with Supply Chain.
  • Ensure full code compliance with NEC (NFPA 70), NFPA 70E, UL listings (e.g., UL 508A), and relevant IEEE, ANSI, and utility standards.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, controls, thermal, and civil teams to align design intent with environmental, quality, schedule, and budget targets.
  • Support site activities including installation, factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT), energization, protection settings, troubleshooting, and turnover documentation.
  • Onsite construction support and contractors supervision
  • Develop comprehensive documentation including load lists, equipment specifications, I&C I/O lists, commissioning procedures, and as-built packages.
  • Interface with utilities and EPC partners through all project phases, from pre-FEED and FEED to detailed design and commissioning, to ensure seamless interconnection and SCADA integration.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) and 5+ years of experience in industrial or utility-scale power systems engineering.
  • Proficiency with ETAP or SKM Power Tools for load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, and arc-flash analysis.
  • Deep understanding of NEC (NFPA 70) and NFPA 70E requirements.
  • Experience with protective relays and control systems, including logic development and settings validation.
  • Proven track record managing vendor relationships, RFQs, and equipment procurement.
  • Field and commissioning experience with MV/LV systems, including FAT, SAT, and startup support.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment with shifting priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (active or ability to obtain).
  • Hands-on experience with medium-voltage systems up to ~35 kV, cable sizing/ampacity, grounding, lighting, and conduit/cable tray design.
  • Strong familiarity with UL, IEEE, and ANSI requirements.
  • Experience supporting EPCs through all engineering and commissioning phases.
  • Background in utility-scale energy storage, high-power converters, or grid interconnection.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% during plant commissioning and bring-up.
