Job Description
ScottishPower's Smart Metering Department is responsible for delivering a multi-year, multi-million-pound investment in smart meter infrastructure across the UK. The Stock Manager plays a pivotal role in managing the forward logistics of metering assets, ensuring efficient delivery and stock management across Great Britain, as well as overseeing the return of removed assets. This role works closely with Meter Operators and internal teams to keep the supply chain running smoothly and supports the deployment and maintenance of millions of smart meters.
What you'll be doing
Forward Logistics and Asset Management
- Manage forward logistics cycle for metering assets, ensuring timely and accurate deliveries from third-party warehouses and to Meter Operators.
- Oversee the return process for removed assets, coordinating with field teams and Meter Operators to ensure efficient collection and handling.
- Lead physical stock takes, reconciliations, and compliance with internal controls to safeguard assets.
- Drive best practices in stock management, such as first in first out and priority installations, to minimise risk and reduce unnecessary stock movements.
- Prepare and deliver regular operational and system reports.
- Continuously improve logistics processes to optimise efficiency and service levels.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with Meter Operators and internal teams.
Quality, Stock, and Efficiency
- Maintain accountability for physical stock takes and reconciliations, ensuring all smart meters and related equipment are accurately recorded and safeguarded.
- Support the management of asset flows for a large-scale smart metering programme, with up to ten thousand new assets deployed in the field each week at peak times.
- Work closely with internal teams to align delivery schedules with operational forecasts and ensure that service levels are consistently met.
- Contribute to the management and reporting of assets valued at over eight hundred million pounds, supporting the strategic objectives of the Smart Metering Department.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Meter Operators and internal stakeholders to ensure high standards of service and operational excellence.
- Continuously seek opportunities to improve logistics processes, drive efficiency, and reduce the total cost of ownership over the life of the smart metering programme.
- Compliance and Security
- Ensure a consistent approach to the security and safety of assets within the logistics chain.
- Ensure that all logistics processes meet all regulatory, health and safety, environmental, and quality standards.
Reporting and Service Standards
- Provide the Operations Manager with high-quality reports and presentations on the operational performance of the logistics function.
- Establish, promote, encourage, and monitor high quality service standards to ensure that all work is of an excellent standard and that data collected and processed meets the quality and time criteria set by all contracted parties.
What you'll bring
- Degree or equivalent business experience
- Significant experience in logistics, supply chain, or account management
- Strong background in operational roles, ideally within logistics, stock control, or factory environments
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organisational skills
- Proven ability to manage large, geographically dispersed distribution networks
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills
- Outstanding communication, negotiation, and influencing abilities
- Customer-focused mindset with a drive for continuous improvement
- Experience in the utilities sector and knowledge of metering assets is an advantage
Minimum Criteria
- Degree qualified or equivalent business experience
- Experience in a business, numerate or technical discipline with a proven track record of contract management
- Strong influencing and negotiation skills, with the ability to obtain buy in from all levels of the organisation and external providers to deliver effective commercial arrangements
- Industry experience in an operational management or professional role(s) ideally with experience in a logistics or industrial stock control or factory environment, with an understanding of the meter refurbishment and stock management process
- Utilities industry management experience with clear understanding of the equipment and materials associated with materials management and logistics
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
