You'll be responsible for guiding a team of talented engineers in the design, development and maintenance of our crucial data infrastructure and pipelines. The team is building data platform tools and processes to be used across OVO. This work ensures that all the data needed to make smart, strategic decisions about energy and sustainability flows reliably.

This role in a nutshell

This role calls for a powerful mix of strong technical expertise, leadership and project management skills. You'll ensure the team delivers high-quality projects on time and within budget, all while maintaining our high data engineering standards. Your leadership will be crucial in fostering a collaborative and innovative environment, driving the team's success and contributing directly to the strategic direction of data across the organisation.

Your key outcomes will be

  • Lead a team of talented data engineers by setting technical direction and working with our Product Management team to deliver value to our users.
  • Actively mentor and develop team members, enhancing their technical skills and supporting their career growth within a collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Plan and manage complex data engineering projects, ensuring they are delivered efficiently, on time and within budget.
  • Collaborate on defining key project metrics, tracking deliverables and proactively managing project risks and issues to ensure timely resolution and success.
  • Define and enforce data engineering standards, best practices and methodologies across the team to guarantee consistency and quality.
  • Drive the development and implementation of robust, scalable data architectures and pipelines, ensuring data architecture is clearly aligned with our overarching business goals.
  • Ensure high-quality data integration and processing, keeping our systems reliable and our data trustworthy.
  • Proactively identify and implement process improvements to enhance the team's overall efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Drive the adoption of data engineering best practices and automation across the organisation, helping us stay innovative and effective.

You'll be a successful Staff Data Engineer here at OVO if you...

  • Have proven experience in leading data engineering projects, ensuring they're delivered consistently on time and within budget.
  • Have experience working on platform solutions; delivering tools that are used across an organisation.
  • Have a deep understanding of data engineering concepts, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Are an expert in data warehousing and modern data processing systems.
  • Are highly proficient in SQL and scripting languages (like Python) and have expertise with data processing tools such as Dataform or dbt.
  • Have a solid understanding of cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or GCP). We work with the GCP Data tools: BigQuery, Dataform, Data Stream.
  • Have proven experience deploying services and infrastructure. Have a working knowledge of Terraform and familiarity with DevOps practices and tools
  • Prioritise data security, compliance, and governance, ensuring our data infrastructure is reliable and trustworthy.
  • Have strong leadership and team management skills, coupled with excellent mentoring and coaching abilities to help your team grow.
  • Use strategic thinking and planning skills to influence and drive technical decisions that align with our long-term goals.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, making you an effective collaborator and people leader.

We'll pay you between ??80,000 - ??100,000, depending on your specific skills and experience.

We keep our pay ranges broad on purpose to give us, and you, flexibility to match your experience to our zero carbon mission.

You'll be eligible for an on-target bonus of 15%. We have one OVO bonus plan that focuses on the collective performance of our people to deliver our Plan Zero goal.
