What They Do
Octopus Energy has rapidly evolved from a UK energy supplier into a global entity, offering a diverse range of services and products. The company focuses on technology-driven energy solutions, primarily through its Kraken Technologies platform, which utilizes machine learning for customer-centric automation and supply chain management. This platform is licensed to utilities such as EDF Energy and E.ON, supporting over 50 million accounts worldwide (source: octopusenergy.group). Their offerings include 100% renewable electricity tariffs, time-of-use plans, and EV concierge services, catering to residential households, businesses, and global utilities (source: octopusenergy.com). With a strong emphasis on integrating renewable energy sources, Octopus Energy targets customers who are EV owners, solar adopters, and smart home users, providing them with innovative solutions that promote savings through dynamic pricing (source: energydigital.com).
Projects & Track Record
Octopus Energy Generation manages a portfolio of 300 projects across eight countries, primarily focusing on solar and offshore wind energy. With £6 billion in assets, these projects power approximately four million homes, and the company has established a reputation for paying 100,000 UK households for solar exports, generating 1.2 billion kWh annually (source: octopusenergy.com). Notable projects include the acquisition of Zestec Renewable Energy in December 2022, which aimed to expand their renewable energy capabilities, and a carbon-neutral bid deal in Manchester targeting 2038 neutrality (source: wikipedia.org). The company is also actively involved in ongoing initiatives like KrakenFlex, which balances grid energy through the integration of EVs, batteries, and solar technology (source: octopusenergygeneration.com).
Recent Developments
In recent years, Octopus Energy has made significant strides in expanding its market presence. In September 2023, the company completed the acquisition of Shell Energy's UK and German household businesses, which increased its domestic and business customer base to 6.5 million, achieving a 22% market share in the UK by April 2024 (source: wikipedia.org). Additionally, the company announced plans to spin off Kraken Technologies in September 2025, a move aimed at scaling operations to over seven million UK customers and enhancing its energy transition technology (source: youtube.com). These developments underscore Octopus Energy's commitment to innovation and growth in the energy sector.

We're making electric vehicle ownership as smart and as simple as possible by building the giant, virtual charging platform of the future. In four years, Octopus Electroverse has grown to become the largest consumer eMobility player in Europe, with over 1.2 million connected electric vehicle chargers and a customer ecosystem spanning web, iOS, Android, CarPlay, Android Auto and more.
But it's just the start: we're busy expanding internationally, working with more automotive and tech partners, building exciting new features at scale, and creating the integrated charging experiences of the future - all in the name of making public EV charging super simple for customers.
Electroverse is a multifunctional team made up of product, development, commercial, operations, marketing, partnerships and more - all focused together on making Octopus the go-to name in EV charging. And we're looking for smart individuals with an interest in the space who can help us make it happen.
About the role
We're looking for an experienced financial operator ready to step up, take the wheel, and drive the strategy for a complex, rapidly growing business within Octopus Group. We've already got the "now" covered. Our operational finance engine is humming beautifully thanks to a team who keeps the gears turning and the books balanced. What we need is a navigator - someone who will delegate the day-to-day mechanics to our capable team and spend their time focused on the road ahead with ownership of business planning, budgeting and financial oversight.
This isn't just a role for a spreadsheet enthusiast; it's a career track designed to lead to a Finance Director role within 12 to 24 months.
What you'll do
- Financial Planning & Performance
- Lead annual budgeting and in-year re-forecasting processes across the department
- Monitor actual performance vs plan, including diagnostic and recommended action plans if required
- Own and continuously develop the financial models that power our business
- Drive short and long-term business planning, ensuring alignment with Group strategy and reporting to the Commercial Director
- Contribute to board packs, monthly reporting, and strategic presentations for stakeholders
- Cash & Capital Management
- Own and improve divisional cash flow forecasting
- Prepare variance analysis on weekly and monthly cashflow performance against budget
- Leadership & Collaboration
- Support the Senior Leadership Team with strategic analysis
- Oversight of the Electroverse Operational Finance team, with the Finance Manager and their team reporting directly to you
What you'll need
- To be excited about tackling the urgent issue of climate change through supporting a high-growth business leading the energy transition; experience in green tech would be an advantage, but not essential, but a strong desire to learn about the sector today and where it's going tomorrow is a must
- To be able to present complex information - particularly complex financial analysis to those from a non-financial background - in simple ways
- Experience in building Excel-based financial models and Powerpoint/Google Slides-based executive packs
- To be ready to roll up both sleeves and get stuck into complex modelling, but also talk 'big picture' with senior stakeholders that you interact with
- To be fast-paced in approach, but understand that change in organisation requires engaging with people in different ways
- To be curious and open minded: the products we're building are often at the cutting edge of industry (plus the eMobility industry we operate is in itself also quite new!) so it requires our leadership to challenge and evolve business models accordingly
- An understanding in business finance and accounting, but not necessarily ACA or CIMA qualified if you have the right experience
- Previous experience in investment banking, consulting, or corporate finance - including the preparation of board/steerco-level materials, due diligence for M&A transactions - would be an advantage but not essential
If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.
