Job Description
The Head of Devices and Metering leads the development and innovation of device and metering solutions within the gas and electric metering segment of R&D. This role drives product excellence, ensures compliance with global standards, and advances technologies aligned with Landis+Gyr' s strategic goals. The position oversees the design and enhancement of devices and metering products across Hardware, Mechanical, Testing, and Firmware teams, manages Engineering Directors and Managers, and serves as the site leader for the Lafayette, Indiana office.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead hardware development and delivery to ensure efficient, consistent execution.
- Manage and develop global R&D teams to deliver high-quality hardware aligned with business objectives and IPL requirements.
- Establish and refine organizational processes that support evolving design needs.
- Integrate platform solutions into current and next-generation products.
- Drive strategic initiatives that improve organizational efficiency.
- Build leadership capability and manage overall organizational performance.
- Collaborate with Product Management, Quality, IT, Regions, and global R&D peers to align on strategy, harmonize tools/processes, and leverage global initiatives.
- Partner with Product Management and Solutions Architecture to define long-term electrical device strategy.
- Define and oversee metrics for support performance.
- Maintain ownership of design processes and tools; coordinate with Governance teams on improvements.
- Manage firmware hotfix and patch processes in partnership with SIT and customer project teams.
- Provide change-request development for customer projects as agreed with Product Management.
- Support customer projects in failure analysis and resolution.
- Recruit, develop, and retain top engineering talent across hardware, mechanical, firmware, and test functions.
- Oversee project planning, budgets, schedules, and execution to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
- Approve final design documentation and deliverables from Hardware Engineering.
- Main Leadership contact for employees onsite at the Lafayette office location
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong hardware, electrical systems, and embedded software understanding.
- Proven leadership and team-management experience.
- Expertise in testing methodologies and relevant technologies.
- Proficiency with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DVMs).
- Experience with power electronics, including transformers, regulators, switching supplies, and filtering.
- High-voltage design experience preferred.
- Background in product development and manufacturing processes.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard PC applications.
- Ability to drive motivation and engagement of employees of all levels and build a positive culture
Accountabilities
- Travel up to 30%.
- Manage departmental budgets and talent decisions to ensure timely, thorough, and cost-effective project delivery.
- Engage with divisional leaders and project managers to define engineering requirements.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or related Engineering field required; Master's preferred.
- 10+ Years experience in managing/leading high-quality teams in related industry
- 10+ years of relevant technical experience and product-development leadership.
- Experience bringing products to market and sustaining them.
- Strong interpersonal, influence, and cross-cultural collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of firmware/hardware design principles, agile and test-driven development, and continuous integration.
- Familiarity with modern development tools and industry best-practice models.

Pay is in the range of $164,801 - $227,317 per year. The position is eligible for a 401(k) match and consideration for an annual bonus. The actual base salary offered depends on a variety of factors, which may include, as applicable, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, and certifications or other professional licenses held.
